Who was Jack Dempsey's third most deserving title opponent who never got a title shot?

If Wills and Gerb were #1 and #2, who was #3?

Godfrey, Norfolk, or maybe Stribling come to mind. Thoughts?

Probably either Kid Norfolk or Charley Weinert.

Which heavyweights did Norfolk or Stribling beat during Dempsey's reign to qualify them as challengers?
Stribling was not ranked as a heavyweight until 2 years after Dempsey retired.Norfolk was never ranked as one.Renault was in the top ten for 3 years and the top 12 for another.
The answer imo,is Jack Renault who beat
    Godfrey twice ,once by ko.
    Fulton by ko.
    Cowler by ko.
    Madden.
    Rojas.
    Risko.
    During Dempsey's reign.

    Gerb???

Weinert was only ranked in one year.

Millard "The Gerbil" Gerb. Nat Fleischer called him "The Gerbinator". Unfortunately there are no videos to prove he was worthy of the title
shot. His fans are called Gerbophiles, and they number in the millions.

    Check out his website www.thegerbinator.com

You could make a good argunment for Tate actually.

He had a win and a draw against Wills.

Floyd Johnson was an okay contender until Willard beat him.

He put together a pretty good run of form in 1924.

    i vote for Jack Johnson.

He was an all time great fighter, maybe the greatest ever.

He lost the title in a close fight (he would have won it under the shortened round fights that Dempsey fought under).

He was undefeated for Dempsey and Willards entire reigns (well i havent double checked the dates, but it must be pretty close to this).

This would had to have been a high grossing fight wouldnt it?

In many ways, this would be like Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield or Lennox Lewis going undefeated for the last 10 years (against average contenders admittedly, probably old George Foreman opponent like fighters) and not getting a shot at the title. Hard to believe really

Humphrey Bogart was the original "Gerber Baby" on the Gerber Babyfoods label.
"Gerb" was probably heavily considered also?

Firpo and Rojas were both ranked in the end out year rankings of 1924, and Weinert beat them both in that year.
Sharkey broke the rankings in 1925, and had a couple of signature wins very early in him career.

If Dempsey had elected to have a fight that year, it would very likely have been him if Wills was out of the question.

As I said Weinert was ranked in 1924 that's it ,does that top Renault's time in the rankings and his results? Sharkey was 22 years old with 11 fights under his belt, 3 of which he had lost including his last 2.
