I think it would make for an exciting fighter with Frazier dominating Toney on the ropes with Toney landing often with eye catching shots. Question is would Toney be able to handle the smoke Frazier would bring......
If we're talking a vintage 1971 FOTC Frazier, he swarms on, wears down and stops...tko's a battered Toney within 10 rounds....I agree that it would have been an accumulation of leather that would have caused Toney to collapse somewhat like Tony Zale did at the conclusion of his bout with Marcel Cerdan.
What fight of Toney's would you highlight as showing he can definitely go a full 15 rounds with a super high output powerful Top 10 ATG Heavyweight?
Mismatch. This is about threefold tougher for Toney to deal with than the McCallum fights. He couldn't get that guy off him and just how many ko's did Mike get at middle? The other thing Joe did was to continually work on the inside. Toney doesn't and he will never keep up the pace with this guy anyway. After about 7 rounds, Toney's legs will be gone and he'll be on the ropes just playing defense and trying to weather storms. TKO 10 and fight about ruins Toney from the amount of punishment he absorbs before getting stopped. James needs different kinds of heavies to succeed against and this is not one of those styles.
Mc Callum and Frazier are two entirely different fighters. The fight will take place mostly on the inside. Toney is one of the best on the insight ever period. He will land the upper cut - hook and the counter right clean on Frazier and regularly. At the end, Frazier's strength and relentness will be too much for him though. Toney is not a natural heavyweight. I do not see a stoppage though.If Toney will be in danger, he will play defense for teh last rounds. This is a guy who was never stopped in over 90 fights, has a granite chin and formidable defense. Fought in every condition imaginable,, on one leg, severly weight drained when sick. Fought big punchers like Peter, Rahman Browne to his mid 40s and was never close to being stopped.
It's not his chin that causes failure, it's the absorption of body punishment. Like McCallum though, what you are asking Toney to do here is to absorb a ton of bodywork. But it's Joe digging shots and not 160 pound McCallum. Joe is no headhunter in there and his right hand counter off a missed right hand by the opponent is a non-factor in the fight. Sam Peter and Hasim Rahman are not going to pressure Toney the way a Frazier does. Let alone their work ethis. How well do you think those guys hold up in the Manilla heat? Those are the styles James can cope with. Guys like Marciano/Dempsey/Tyson/Frazier are a different kettle of fish. That's where the ko's can occur.
