Something which bothers me - and it mostly comes from more casual fans on social media - is that any criticism of him is met with "HOW MANY FIGHTERS HAVE YOU TRAINED AND WON TITLES WITH??". It's on par when you say a boxer is doing something wrong and bam almost instantly "laced a pair of gloves up yourself, have ya?". It's just so stupid. Using that logic, unless you've won an oscar you can literally never slag a film off.
If we followed that logic then people could only ever criticise something that they did or have done for a living.
He is obviously a class coach as results speak for themselves but as with everybody he isn't always right, only time I've seen/hear him put hands up is he said was his fault Crolla lost to Matthews
Well Quigg vs Frampton seemed to be another where he needs to take responsibility as he was telling his guy he was winning rounds whilst he was doing absolutely nothing. It was only when the Sky team told him Scott was way behind that he changed tactics.
I'm not disagreeing is definitely a couple where I didn't agree with his reading of the fight, mind in that fight I didn't think Frampton was as far ahead as he to did very little, the Cuban v Quigg was more worrying for me as I actually think Quigg could have stopped him if went at him. But I do think he is a top top coach
Well we'll soon know. He's pretty much thrown all of his previous fighters under the bus when they lost, attributing it to them not having the extra gears to fight any differently. With Calum however, he and Eddie have hyped his abilities to the heavens so he won't have that as an excuse if he fails at world level.
I do think is an argument he has improved them all massively, the one who I do think was and is genuinely world class and I've seen him behind closed doors sporadically throughout the years long before he went to Gallaghers is Quigg. Smiths a good good kid like you say be a bad if he doesn't get a world title. I think if where honest 99% of us knew Liam Smith wasn't beating Canelo he didn't disgrace himself, Crolla most wouldn't have gave a prayer of winning a world title so have to give Joe credit on that, Quigg yeah he got tactics wrong, Stephen Smith is definitely there or there abouts again he gave a good account of himself so not sure how much stick Joe can get for that
Well Liam Smith was manoeuvred to his title without fighting anyone of note, there was no gradual step up in class. Personally I think you're doing your fighter a disservice by protecting them like that as the gulf is going to be far too big to overcome when they finally have to fight a world level operator. That is unless he had no faith in Liam to make the progression from domestic level.
Valid point although I think Canelo is beyond world level, there is a gulf even from world level to likes of him/GGG/Floyd etc. As you say probably been better getting a couple of European to World level tests in, however it is a job and if life changing money v Canelo as much as people maybe don't like to hear it that could have swayed it.
Don't get me wrong, they had to take the Canelo pay day, I just think that they should have been prepping Liam for the deep end with a few proper tests before throwing him in.
Id agree with you im guessing the shot came up and it was like its however many hundred thousand or million your set up for life kid lets go, im assuming maybe wrongly that any normal fight not being able to spar for 4 weeks prior would have saw him pull out
Both Crolla's wins Perez and Barosso and Quigg v Martinez off the top of my head. Especially as when Crolla lost in prizefighter many had him finished. Im not all in on Joe but I think he consistently produces so I have a level of respect for him, his ability is probably somewhere in between his opinion of himself and the average Eddie Hearn haters opinion. They don't give out ring magazine coach of the year easily, the biggest danger is resting on that. I've been to a few show's years ago where you could see him sitting studying the game with his notepad he definitely lives it
Indeed but the time the likes of Canelo come a calling you want to have faced someone a little better than John Thomson on your way up. He'd have more success at the top table if he stopped his fighters taking the absolute path of least resistance to get there.
