    What other boxers whose skill set was elite put their country on the world boxing map? Ideally, list not only the boxer and country (self-evident), but maybe also give a reason for your choice. I think there is no questioning the credibility of the fives names above, they speak for themselves and need no elaboration.

    Ayub Kalule was Ugandan.
    He came along about the same time as Cornelius Boza-Edwards, I think in terms of contesting world titles he came along slightly before.

    I know about Pancho Villa and some other philipino greats, but someone expected a philipino fighter to be the biggest atraction in boxing before Manny Pacquiao?

    Thank you so much for your comprehensive list (much appreciated)!! It's what I was hoping for :). In terms of Dariusz Michalczewski, he fought only four times under the Polish flag during his professional career (the last four bouts, to be exact). In Poland, many fans hate him and/or deem his as a traitor (for having spent most of his pro career in Germany). Either way, Poles do not regard Michalczewski as the man who put their country on the boxing map, they regard Andrew Golota having done so (not to mention, and many probably don't know, but Dariusz is about 25% German whereas Golota is fully of Polish ancestry).

    Good choices. In regards to Cerdan, didn't he enter the ring representing France? Overall some fine picks there, Firpo esp. catches my eye. Not only the first elite-level boxer from Argentina, as you underscored, but also the fact he was a heavyweight makes his stock rise that much more (at least I think so).
