Of course he could, he'd be right in the mix.

Break it down then. How exactly does Mayweather lose to Buchanan?

Mayweather in the 60s and 70s?

    He's called George Benton.

No way a boxer from the black and white tv era is comparable to TBE.

At 130 - 140, I'd probably favour Mayweather against everyone apart from Duran and Napoles.
Don't get me wrong, there are others who I wouldn't be surprised to see beat him, but I'd make them slight underdogs.

At 147 there's probably quite a few who'd beat him.

    1. Floyd's fanboys are blinded by a bad case of man love. They've heard about his first fight with Castillo but haven't watched it because they "weren't into boxing back then".
    2. Floyd has fought in a "soft" and highly political / business focused era of boxing. He has been able to avoid fighting the best fighters and therefore avoid the damage accumulated by boxers who fight live opponents during their careers whilst padding his record. I consider it a version of WWF where it's just a staged performance.
    3. Oscar's gift decision to Floyd - I'll stop jabbing and give you the decision if I get some back end fights, waa just one of many close stinkfests that Floyd has won. I don't even think he outlanded old Pacquiao.
    4. Floyd is a fine athlete brought up to succeed in the sport of boxing, but he is a better business man. He would have been competitive in the 60s and 70s but he would have lost his share of fights being forced to fight the best fighters and more than just once or twice per year. Boxing was once one of the most popular sports on the planet. Simple economics will tell you that is when the best fighters walked the earth.

Those divisions are two of the most talented rich in boxing history. Floyd would lose to multiple fighters from those weight classes. He struggled with much lesser fighters than dozens from those weight classes.

Excellent post. Especially in the last paragraph. Though I'm sure others will try and tell you boxing has evolved which is bull**** outwith sports science/nutrition.

I was talking about specifically the 1960s - '70s, and mainly those already mentioned.

Of course, there are several lightweights in history I'd favour against him. Definitely.

    My apologies.

Who would you favour against him?

Ike Williams, Barney Ross, Henry Armstrong, Benny Leonard, Tony Canzoneri, Pernell Whitaker, Julio Cesar-Chavez, Niccolino Locche, Aaron Pryor, Jimmy McLarnin ..... among others.

Guys like Buchanan, Laguna, DeJesus ... I'd make Floyd a slight favourite.

Good post. Stylistically who do you think would cause Floyd more problems out of Laguna, Buchanan and DeJesus?
