Hardly a robbery though I wouldn't have complained about a SK victory, Your stuck on stats which is a shame because a fight is fought in the ring and not on paper, I agree SK showed power, accuracy and dominance at time however if you can't see Ward adjusted and grinded him down took away his stronger assets and controlled the atmosphere of the fight from the mid-point and the majority of the late rounds then your suffering from confirmation biased. No robbery stop belittling what these men showed us on Saturday.
4 clear Ward rounds(7,8,9,11), 4 clear Kovalev rounds(1,2,6,10) and 4 extremely close rounds. I don't see how a scorecard of 114-113 can be a robbery in a fight like this.
I went to rewatch it but clicked the History Channel catch-up instead. I had Ward winning WWII in a tight but conclusive UD.
Feeling is certainly mutual in most instances though I don't knock those that leaned in favor of SK I can certainly see why one would say he deserved the nod. It actually doesn't bother me that one wouldn't absorb what Ward was accomplishing in there because we don't have that eye. I based my 7-5 score on the fact that SK wasn't able to execute and impose his will and plan as long as Ward. In close fights sometimes you look to see "who's fight is being fought" and it was clearly Ward that had a tactical advantage of the majority of the mid to later rounds.
Exactly, I think many tend to forget what's you see at face value can have tons of foundational issues....the impression left by SK after the opening stages of the fight set a bar that Ward was forced to overcome in some peoples views while others judged the fight on a round by round basis instead of focusing on the "catch up" aspect once SK took such a commanding lead. What makes this fight so intriguing is the fact that its hard to compare any other top tier bouts to this one......it revealed practically everything I love about this sport and why it meant so much to me growing up and training, practicing, reading and watching old-school fights.
For what it's worth, one fight I think this one had similarities with was Hopkins-Calzaghe. But I agree with what you said 100%.
Kovalev didnt turn up the punch volume throughout the fight but won all 6 first rnds and scored a knock down, yet didnt fight his fight enough t o win, even though its up to the challenger to convincingly defeat a champion ??? Sorry but this was not a hard fight to score if you turn off the volume of biased/confusing as well as being wrong who did what and when in the fight . Even if you gave Ward a rnd before rnd 7 he still lost. I also found it interesting watching the fight again with sound how many oohs and ahhs Ward got by landing jabs and even the referee who has the ultimate view said the judges screwed it up . lol
Cry me a river LOL your boy lost all them belts! The more you haters cry the more I laugh! You can complain all you want but, the outcome will remain the same! This is some top notch entertainment! Thank you ward haters for all the good times!
Exactly. Most boxing fans don't know how to score rounds. Kovs offense was nullified after round 4 and could only effectively land jabs. He followed Ward around the ring unable to cut it off and he got tired. When he did land it's clear as day the power faded as the fight went on. I don't understand why people can't take emotion out when watching a fight.
Its healthy to agree to disagree, I'm not attempting to sway your opinion just trying to provide a different angle for you to assess. I don't usually co-sign the "take away the belt from the champion" theory only because many of those pundits equate that to KO'ing the champ to win and I don't entirely support that definition. I think you might be vesting too much in the KD and those moments in the fight when SK was able to land some effective crowd pleasing punches, difference is Wards effective and crowd pleasing punches had more purpose and follow up. Visually it seemed as if the pace just maintained more on Wards side while SK seemed to depreciate in output, confidence and snap. The fight was an evolution so to speak, I thought SK did an awesome job by not completely turning the pace over to Ward and when you combine that with his early dominance one could certainly see him holding on to a win while it seemed Ward's progression and overall understanding of how to break SK down was only improving, SK did well in moments trying to break the Ward inertia it just wasn't consistent enough to break the mold Ward had built during the mid to late rounds. Just my 2 cents.....which may be exactly the value you've placed to this opinion lol....
If you have to watch a fight with sound off and slow motion and whatever else you clearly don't know how to score. You're right. It wasn't a hard fight to score if you follow scoring criteria. Kov only got rounds 1,2,4 on my card and you could've gave him the 10th.
I reserve the term robbery when the bout isn't close. This was clearly a very close bout, highly competitive, to the point where you should have been thinking "they need to rematch" regardless of which arm was raised at the end. That being said: It's much easier to make an argument for Kovalev than Ward. At best, I felt Ward fought his way back to a draw. Just my opinion. I also wish they'd fight a 15 round bout. This is the type of match up where 15 rounds would be awesome.
Kovalev out landed and had more power shots landed .Accumulitive late body shots does not remotely erase who had control of the fight give or take a few rnds where Kovalev slowed down . Just because Kovalev wasnt as productive in later rnds doesnt mean hes losing the fight either and yes in any combat sport a close fight almost always goes to the Champion not the challenger which is only logical .
Logical for you....plus while I found the fight razor thin I still clearly gave Ward the benefit of the doubt by 2 rounds which for me supersedes the close fight goes to the champion theory. Again your weighing your rationale on marginal stats, I could argue that Ward landed at a higher percentage thus being more efficient does that tell the whole story? Are you willing to "state" that you did not see SK slowly being broken down while Ward increased his presence and impact as the fight progressed? A fight like this is better judged using pace, generalship, imposing of will, and authority down the stretch.
