There will be a re match but remember this, Kovalev is not in the drivers seat. He dictates nothing. What does he bring to the table besides hurt feelings.
Erm...a contract with a guaranteed immediate rematch? A growing consensus that there is unfinished business between the two, given that the bulk of the public and media considered him to be the winner? These are all solid grounds to see a re-run of a great, close fight. Pre-emptively defending a fighters right to pass up a great fight due to egotistical concerns as to who is in the driving seat, or who dictates what is one of the things that has caused this massive gumming up of the boxing works.
Stop. How many years have people been saying that Ward would pull out against Kovalev and it never happened? How many people said Ward would never fight again? How many people said he wouldn't fight multiple times a year? He fought three times this year. That he's only interested in tuneups? All garbage.
There are some big obstacles to overcome here, everyone from HBO said the rematch won't be on PPV. So where will the money come from? Next time Kovalev will have to take Brand money to get the fight.. It's a shame, especially since no rematch would be needed if the judges had done their jobs.
Yeah right HBO would be foolish mofo's if they don't put it on PPV, and I would expect the terms for the rematch would have to be made pre 1, or atleast there won't be much of a difference in purse splits
