Ward talked about beating Klits a year or so back, starting to truly believe it. He can beat Klit.

BUT, he didn't beat Kovalev . that's not to say it's impossible , but it's highly improbable

 

Of course, 50lbs added on an elephant is less dramatic than 50 lbs added to an ant. Still, the weight difference between a 230 lbs HW and a 175 (Ok say 185 lbs) LHW is dramatic. Think of guys who moved up from LHW/CW to HW. Huck has decent power at CW, he landed dozens of shot on a fat Povetkin yet all he got was the occasional wobble. Wlad floored Povetkin multiple times, once from a jab if I recall correctly.

Ward did well against Kovalev who is probably one of the hardest hitting LHWs of recent memory. But let's not forget he did go down once he got hit flush by a fresh Kovalev. In later rounds, I felt Ward just getting more adept at timing Kovalevs punches. He wasn't (very smartly so!) not trying to walk through them. So its less a factor of Ward having a great chin but his ability to slip punches vs. a LHW who he matches in reach.

He wouldn't be able to do that at HW because he would have to bridge a 2 ft. gap before being able to land his own punches. He would have to take 2 punches while coming in before being able to land one of his own with a lot of luck. He doesn't have the chin nor reach for that. He'd get destroyed in a nasty mismatch that'd be interesting to watch only for sadists.

 

Fair points but I wouldn't call Briggs an exceptionally hard puncher at HW anymore. His power is the only thing he still has left going for him really, and is enough to crush some tomato cans, and is probably greater than what 99.99% of light heavyweights possess, but for HW, these days, his power is probably B-. Kovalev meanwhile has A++ power for 175lbs. IMO this all works out to probably not a huge discrepancy in favor of Briggs'.

 

They are few and far between in history but there have been documented cases of light heavyweights that demonstrably (based on h2h results versus the same opponents) had better power than world class heavies of their day. I'm of the mind that Kovalev stands in league with the Moores and Fosters.

 

I may be in the minority here but Wlad, p4p, hits harder than Kovalev.

In his defense, he has to have a better chin than Malik Scott or David Price and those guys have some wins.

But him facing any of the tall heavyweights would just be sad. A lot of the shorter heavyweights are just slow plodders, so maybe he could have some success there.

I don't know man. You can just go look at Olympic weightlifting records and see that there doesn't appear to be much of a plateau in going up through the weight divisions.
