Cuckoo's Next was a great freaking movie. Jaws (which was also terrific) might have won in another year but it was up against a cinematic juggernaut. Poor example. Also, for every 'arty" movie that wins, there's another block-buster that tends to clean up at the Academy Awards (see Titanic in 1997, and Forrest Gump in 1994).

Whitaker was in plenty of entertaining fights over the years.

Just because someone appreciates defensive or technical fighters doesn't mean they also don't appreciate offensive based fighters as well. I'm sure those that appreciate the likes of Mayweather, Ward, Rigo, Hopkins etc also enjoy warriors like Gatti, Holyfield etc.

From the point of view of someone that doesn't like such fighters it may seem like snobbery or feigning superiority but just because they appreciate an aspect of boxing you may not doesn't mean they feel superior. It's a matter of personal preference. Some watch boxing for the violence, excitement, drama etc. While others will watch it for this as well but also the skill, technique the strategy etc.

I'll enjoy watching a tear up as much as anyone, but I can also enjoy watching a technical fighter work out a diffuse an opponent.

I agree with what you've said here but Did you seriously just put gatti and Holyfield in the same sentence?

I think its a bit of a reach to believe there's some type of correlation between those who appreciate great defensive fighters and those same people being boxing elitists who believe they're more "sophisticated" than the majority of fans of this wonderful sport.

When I see someone like Mayweather at 37 (or however old he was,) missing power punches by centimeters from someone like Canelo Alvarez and than within milliseconds, lasering a counter shot back at him while being pinned on the ropes, I tend to marvel more at that type of accomplishment compared to a fighter landing a 3 punch combination in the middle of the ring.

Anyway, I did read the first half of your post and I saw your preface about your post being somewhat generalized. As some posters have mentioned beforehand, i personally enjoy all facets of boxing- from two defensively challenged fighters like Ward and Gatti (RIP) beating each others brains in the center of the ring to guys like Pernell and Benitez making top tier fighters look rudimentary with their defensive brilliance.

Tomorrow night you are going to watch a ****en war. I want Walters to walk through loma and his lonely ass right jab/hook and make him suffer. He will try to clinch when Walters chases him and land some bull**** body punches. Feel no pain Walters and **** his ass up. Fuel the anger that the man once called you a coward. The former LW came back down to 126 to have a size advantage and back up to 130. **** everything about Loma and take his best **** and use your two fisted fury and knock his ass out. Stay on top of his punk ass all fight. Jab your way in and throw punches with mean intentions like George Foreman used to. **** his ass up Walters. He talked **** about you. **** his ass up. Blizz! Loma will get my respect if he wins, but he won't have it until he wins. War Walters!!!

Ssm was always far too stiff and shaky for me to think of him as a true elite fighter . I think he carved himself a great hof career but elite he never reached imho

I think he's talking about the difference between a true pure boxer and a runner. The difference between a prime James Toney and Erislandy Lara.

Some of them sure, but they're no more annoying than people who call any sort of long-range boxing "running" and get bored if the two guys aren't bleeding all over the place.

Only savages prefer offensive fighters to the technical brilliance of fighters like Ward. CST prefers to see fighters get their brains bashed in because he's mentally unhinged.
