As mcvey has already pointed out, it is a HYPOTHETICAL interview, IMAGINED by him .... Therefore, the response of Sonny Liston is a piece of fiction .......

    Source?

I think he has just made the 'quote' up.

Seems rather a pointless exercise to invent a quote, then try to use it to prove a point.
Perhaps Trump really was onto something..

If Marciano was asked to describe his ideal opponent would he describe a 212lbs compressed giant who hit like thunder with either hand ,and who had an all time great jab with a monster reach?

He might describe a fighter that quit when not on top, a fighter that can be starched for the count of 10 and a fighter who could possibly take a dive??????

Liston might prefer a big but feather-fisted fighter plodding towards him. A big upright target, like Wepner was. Or, better yet, one with a glass chin.
    Wepner with Patterson's chin.

Well, Wepner did have very short arms.

Sonny's favourite opponent is any guy who turns up without enough positive mental attitude to actually fight back. This might be why Sonny was so eager to intimidate the opposition with towels stuffed under his robes to exaggerate his shoulders and perfect the dead man's stare?

The problem is it's 'bait and switch'

Would have been better to not dress it as a direct quote (albeit acknowledged as such), because it isn't.

It's an interesting enough thread starter on its own - but obviously not quite as interesting as it would be had Sonny himself actually said it.

It's like when Mayweather Jr said "Shiiiit...I took steroids for about 5 years, late in my career"

#####SPOILER ALERT####### He DID NOT actually say that - I just made it up.

But I have often wondered if he did use some form of PED's. Can you imagine the furore if he actually came out and announced he had done them for years??

    See the difference?

Think you are being unnecessarily hard on a great boxer.

What exactly is the problem with him intimidating opponents? Part of the mental side of the game, which most boxers do. Even Pacquiao with his polite air of unconcern is engaging in a form of intimidation - it just isn't the crass, overweening self-important prattling we see in people like Mayweather.

Sonny was absolutely a great fighter. without doubt he was the best fighter on the planet at one time. his story is a tragic one of exploitation and mystery. He was misunderstood and deserves credit for achieving his goals.

On the question of fighter he most preferred then it would be one that he could beat and he beat them in all shapes and sizes. What was his favourite? like most fighters his most favourite is one he could beat. He made famous the dead man's stare and towel stuffed robe. And he was intimidating. what's wrong with saying he wanted to project fear onto his opponent so as to beat them more easily?
