I don't think you understand all of the nuances of MMA. Training TDD is one thing... Being adept or mastering it is another. I agree that Roy was a great athlete in his day and probably would have been able to develop serviceable TDD and defensive BJJ if he worked at it. But he wouldn't just steamroll over everyone. Someone like Daniel Cormier or Yoel Romero would absolutely ragdoll Jones.

Guys get a grip, mma and boxing is so different it's like taking the best QB ever TB12 and asking him to Captain a rugby team while playing.

And taking one of the best rugby player(whoever) and asking him to qb the Patriots ..

The former Olympic wrestlers would be a threat to an elite boxer but if a boxer gets a punch in before or during a takedown it's over.

McGregor was nothing special as a boxer and has managed to dominate wrestlers and BJJ guys. Put an actual elite boxer in the same situation and they will do even better.

 

You're oversimplifying things greatly due to your bias... McGregor has mastered a striking style that's well suited in MMA. He's obviously a very good athlete and has been cross training for almost 10 years. Also he hasn't faced the best grapplers of his division. That's where you're completely mistaken. Put an 'actual' boxer in there and he would be like a fish out of water. Punchers chance at best.

 

As a further extension of my point.

Roy Jones was US junior champion aged 15. At that young age he had been receiving elite coaching for several years. In a truly skilled sport - soccer, basketball, tennis, boxing - you need to be involved from a young age to reach the top.

In MMA you have people coming in as young adults and making it to the top. Yet we are supposed to believe that prime Roy Jones couldn't have learned what 20 year old Connor McGregor learned faster and better.

It depends largely on the training background of the opponent. Put him in with a one dimensional striker like a Lorenz Larkin for example and give him a few months to learn basic sprawling techniques and he'd win.

 

Great athlete who probably pick things up quick... But you can only speculate. As a pure boxer he would only have a punchers chance. End of discussion.

 

Give him a training camp to practice defending takedowns.

Boxers are better at boxing than MMA fighters are at MMA and will be until MMA gets an elite coaching system in place for children which is never going to happen.
