Conor McGregor drew twice (nearly triple) as many buys in 2016 than the entire sport of boxing

UFC format is not better than boxing format.

I wouldn't like a single promotion having a monopoly in boxing. That's basically like giving the entire sport in the hands of Golden Boy, Don King or Bob Arum.

Boxing is too big to be run like that anyway, even in MMA there are more and more elite fighters who are outside of the UFC and fight elsewhere. The UFC has a policy that they cut boring wrestlers immediately even if they're some of the best MMA fighters out there and MMA ATGs like Jake Shields. It would be like cutting Rigo or Lara and preventing them to fight the best because they're boring.

Definitely. There's also a lot of extreme cases of "styles make fights" in MMA.

I like predictable sports like boxing more.

Golovkin is the worst coward of them all. He'd have already fought Lara and Ward by now if he was McGregor.

McGregor makes Golovkin look like an absolute disgrace.

I don't think so, I think that the meteoric rise of the UFC is actually a great thing for boxing. It gets people interested in combat sports in general and the kind of fights that the casual MMA fans like usually consist of 90% of boxing. It's reasonable to expect that some of them will take a look at boxing fights too to see the real deal when it comes to "striking". You have MMA community talking about boxers like Loma and GGG constantly, their guy Joe Rogan can't stop talking about them. A lot of people know boxers through being MMA fans these days.

The rivalry between boxing and MMA is artificial, someone who is a (casual) fight fan will tune in for a good fight, it doesn't matter what the specific rules are.

People feared it, I don't think an one truly expected match making to become this woeful.

Not just that, Conor WANTS TO FIGHT THE BEST. And he goes out on his shield in doing so WHEN he loses.

    Mayweather does none of that.

And people like Cnelo, Floyd etc have a TON of power. Enough to say that they want the very best, period. But they don't.

This. Can't give McGregor all the credit, since the UFC is giving him great opponents and their cards are superstacked. If McGregor started fighting no named unranked guys with nothing on the under card he wouldn't sell either.

They could have as many belts as they liked. If just one was legitimate and ranked people right then people would only care about that one.

In fairness he makes most boxers look like a disgrace. No boxer would jump from Welterweight to Light Heavyweight like he did.

Fact is he is the only superstar in combat sports at the moment, coupled with a DTBG mentality.
