Guys forgive me for beating a dead horse...but...this match up intrigues me. Is it really a given that Liston would beat Dempsey? I don't really have a favorite here (unbaised) and would like to hear some solid breakdowns on this hypothetical. Some on here would pick Dempsey over Joe Louis...with that said, I can't help but think a prime Dempsey would be a real live wire for anyone to handle... Dempsey from the Firpo fight v Liston from the Patterson fight...Opinions please.
Dempsey had fast feet and long arms so he's possibly going to have some success with attempts to slip the Liston jab and bang a right hand in over the top. Dempsey moved well side-to-side, on his toes, despite being a naturally aggressive fighter. Liston's always got the jab and the left hook but Dempsey was probably more vulnerable to the right hand himself, and Liston's right was a bit ponderous. That Liston jab is going to land though, and it was a sickener. And Sonny could hook off it well. Liston had even longer arms than Dempsey and could be fairly adept on his feet staying at his prefered distance, and if Dempsey want to come inside Liston was brutish and carried that extra bulk on Dempsey. But Dempsey was tough and had the extra speed. I'm not sure who'd win !
Dempsey hits harder than anyone Liston fought and is proven against punchers. The more Liston tries to fight with Dempsey the more fuel he adds to Dempsey's fire. The only way to beat Dempsey is to neutralize his offense like Tunney did and not engage him. That is the opposite of Liston. Dempsey KO 2 in a fight fought at a pace that Liston just can't keep up with.
So, Gibbons goes 15 but Liston goes 2? I see Dempsey a bit overawed by Liston's reach and power and staying outside, waiting for his chance as he moves laterally and feints, burning a lot of energy. Liston was more methodical but brutally so. Dempsey finds the ring getting smaller. Liston's jab starts scoring. Dempsey starts taking chances and loses his cool at times giving Liston more openings. Dempsey ultimately settles down on his feet. He works inside only to find that Liston is a bull and is stronger. Out of options, a real beating commences. Dempsey hangs tough but is out in 10, broken and bloody.
Gibbons was a far better fighter than Liston ever was. Also, do you understand that boxing is an art of many styles? Liston and Gibbons were nowhere near the same stylistically. You really do need to take a more in depth look at the fighters you sell so short. Liston is overrated as hell, there isn't one fighter he beat that Dempsey wouldn't smoke in less than 3 full rds. His best wins were Williams along with Patterson and he never seemed to have a definable prime according to some of the people in this section. Talk about tough he was down and out twice in his career, I think I'm going to go with the guy who was never in danger of taking the 10 count when he fought the best, as being the tougher fighter. Patterson had no problem finding his mark and neither would Dempsey. Dempsey was a calculating puncher who made his shots count. Liston has a one dimensional defense and slow footwork which would make him a near stationary target.
I'm sorry, how versatile of a fighter was Liston? How many times did he beat a fighter regarded my many as the best p4p ever? How many times did Gibbons take an L in the first round?
Does Gibbons get to swing some newspaper decisions against the heavyweight Liston? What exactly are Gibbons' heavyweight credentials besides losing an eliminator to a middleweight? As much as I love Gibbons, this is a heavyweight head to head matchup, not a nerd-off.
Liston would beat Gibbons h2h of course but p4p Gibbons is better and what exactly is a "nerd off"? I thought this is a boxing forum to discuss boxing in depth, don't really know why you are here if that is too much for you lol.
Prime Dempsey could move around the ring as fast as Ali. He was very dynamic, combining his footwork with his speed and power. Liston probably hit harder, but Dempsey was a better puncher. Liston almost wins in round 2 when he lands a body shot on the inside that stumbles Dempsey. Jack backs up to the ropes and Liston lands a hard 1-2 before they clinch. Dempsey slips 3 power punches from Liston, and the fight is on again. In round 4, Dempsey goes for a falling step body jab, and gets caught with a non flush uppercut that puts him down for 2 seconds. This is the closest Liston gets to winning. I think in the middle of the fight, Dempseys speed would start to take a toll. Liston finds his jab less, and Dempseys starts landing more frequently, making Liston less aggressive. Sonny uses a lot of head movement and parrying feints while Dempsey moves laterally and in and out. He gets counter angles and lands hard shots that stumble Liston. Liston starts to unravel. Liston goes out on his shield. Dempsey KO 8 Absolute dynamite fight.
