You haven t forced me to rethink anything unless it is my first impression of you! A Jack Dempsey collection was the first film I ever bought that would be in1966/67 Black Hawk Films on Super 8mm .So I guess I am pretty familiar with him. For athleticism,hand speed,footspeed ,elusiveness and basic talent Marciano could not carry Dempsey's spit bucket imo. And that was the consensus of opinion when Marciano was champion!

 

Sorry but you are looking at the fight through Dempsey fan eyes then. In not one round does Dempsey land more clear head shots. If he did the fight wouldn't have even made it out of the second round due to Dempseys power.

The rest you state has nothing to due with the topic at hand which is how he would fare against Liston.

I can't see Dempsey fighting intelligently off the back foot somehow.

 

Not "off the back foot" per se, but watch how he stays outside, circling Willard,until he can get under his guard and unleash his bombs,he wasn't a crude slugger.

 

To do that he'd have to get by one of the most devastating jabs in heavyweight boxing history.

Yes Firpo was more dangerous due to power this was explained . Obviously Carpentier was better than anyone thought im sure Demspey realized this when he was rocked in the first round opening of the bell. If you put Carpentiers skill in the 215 pound Firpo body it doent go so smooth for Dempsey obviously just watch the actual fight and ignore hype. now put 215 pound liston in the picture,these are comparisons you seem to want to brush under the rug and continue to include your obsession with Marciano for some odd reason now comparing him to Dempey hes not even in the topic? lol

1st round

Where is the punch from Carpentier that rocked Dempsey in the initial round?

Dempsey won the first round and he was boxing under wraps!
Carpentier himself said that in the third round he knew he was beaten!

Georges punches were like Kell Brooks on Golovkin. They could snap his head back, but no truly serious damage.

On the other hand, when Dempsey so much landed a punch in the clinch, it looked like Carpentier was getting caved in. A small punch from Dempsey was shifting Carpentiers body like a rag doll.
