That a reasonable alternative PoV. I was a massive Lewis fan and, yeah, maybe had he not retied and taken on Vitali after a full and motivated training camp he would have won a rematch. But who knows? What I do know - well, believe at least - is a prime Lewis would have been too much for a prime Vitali.
Fighter's have definitely come back from worse to win. It's not like the Rahman fight where he couldn't have been expected to have beat the count and carry on.
I haven't seen the McCall fight in ages but remember that shot being right on the button and lewis looking pretty out of it. Don't know if he would have made it up in time, but should have probably been given the oppurtunity to at least try. **Edit** So he did get up but was shaky as ****, probably should have got the benefit of the doubt and given the shot to continue, but I don't know if I can argue with that stoppage. No doubt. The fact that Vitali couldn't finish that version of Lewis says it all. I thought at the time it was stopped Lewis looked the stronger fighter and Vitali was getting stopped that night.
The fact that after the fight it was Chris Byrd getting all the cheers speaks volumes. Why did Vitali duck the Burd rematch?
Lewis Vitali was a very close fight up until Lewis turned his face into **** meat. Lewis won some of those rounds he supposedly lost more so than ward winning some of those rounds ward won. It doesn't matter really, a punch costed vitals face to explode. He needs to grow a tougher skin. Vitaliy skin will probabaly explode against any Atg. Lewis won the last 6 vs mercer. so unless he lost the first 6, he didn't. it wasn't a draw. that's laughable. Why are klitchsjo fans so mad? Go hug fury. I know fury isn't a role model for whites but at least he look white.
Also didn't Vitali quit against a former smw? What's worst. Quitting against Chris Byrd or Destroying the face of a future champion and refusing a rematch?
Yeah, you have a point about how shaky he was but normal procedure as this stage is for the ref to pull on the boxer's arms (I literally don't know why they do this and would like to know - is it to test if there is enough resistance in their body to not fall again?), ask them to form a basic defence and walk forward a little and then make their call. That's another 3-4 seconds to recover right there. This stoppage was odd because the ref kept counting even though Lewis was on his feet and then called it off at nine. That said, maybe I have to concede another hard shot would have finished it. All champs deserve the right to take that shot though, so on balance I think he should have been allowed to box on but might not have changed the result. But yeah, more wobbly than I recalled...
I too thought that the McCall stoppage was pretty fair. The controversy about it was mostly caused by the terrible HBO team who accused the ref of being on Don Kings payroll. Lennox was wobbly as hell and fell into the refs arms. There have been worse stoppages than that.
Well that usually means the ref deems the fighter fit to fight on. Lewis had his gloves all the way upto his face, but was just all over the place leaning in on the ref. A bad stoppage was Chavez-Taylor, lewis-McCall 1 not so much.
He was a pretty basic fighter with the 1-2 but he was just so big and strong so difficult to beat. Skill-wise I was never impressed with him but results-wise he was excellent.
This is the kind of thing best kept as a thought and not expressed in public. If you cannot spot the technical excellence of Lennox Lewis - especially considering he was a HW - there's no hope for you, other than to troll boxing forums; in which case... well done, you're on the money.
