I can see this being a very good fight with a lot of big punches exchanged from two brawlers. My inclination is to go with Tua on the basis of better durability and stopping Peter late. Of course Sam could box a little bit and did well against Wladimir in their first bout so its not written in stone.
QUOTE="ForemanJab, post: 18280569, member: 106949"]Both at their best, who would win?[/QUOTE] Tua quicker, more skilful,[ relatively,] faster puncher, and a more correct one plus a top chin.
Could be Peter on points. Peter was a competent boxer with a jab, with a chin good enough to take hard shots from the Klitschkos. Tua isn't likely to land nearly as often. Tua could not box a lick. He was way down on points vs Maskeav until Maskeav tired and got nailed late.
Tua could box and possessed an effective jab , but his stature dictated how he had to fight. Peter was a clubber, Tua would outwork him and stop him late.Apart from a fat James Toney ,who did Peter ever beat?
Tua may get overrated from time to time, but, he was a much better fighter than Sam Peter. Best vs best, Tua by KO
What a match this would be. Tua had the better career but was easy to outbox if you were elite. Peter had better boxing skills but not so much that I believe he could not be drawn into a slug fest. Ibeabuchi was able to out work Tua in a great fight that could of gone either way I don't think Peter could match that work rate and would lose a decision say 8-4
You underrate Peter. Who else did Peter defeat? Maskeav who was green and ahead of an in shape Tua on points and McCline who was ranked in the top 10. And he beat Tony who was tested positive for PED's Peter at one point was ranked #1 or #2 in the word.
Peter beat a 39 years old Maskaev who had not fought in15 months and who had a chin of purest Dresden China .lol McLine was not ranked when Peter beat him ,in fact I don't think he had been in the top ten for 3 years! In his next fight after Peter beat him he lost to Ruiz whom Tua had taken out inside a round..That ,as I said , leaves only a fat ex middleweight ,Toney as Peter's best scalp!.
Yeah he could box.. His left hook to the head and to the body was as good as they come..There was no fault in his technique when he threw those punches . He was also pretty good as slipping and countering. It was Peter who couldn't box a lick. He literally done nothing good . And i mean nothing Tua would beat the giblets out of that bum.
If fat Eddie Chambers can just stand centre of the ring and easily beat Peter , then Tua would knock his block clean off.. Its really that simple. Peter had an overrated chin too. McCline almost had him taken out in two rounds. Helenius flatlined him. Hell , even Chisora was better than Peter and thats based on efforts against common opponents.
Peter should win this. He was crude as hell, but durable and legitimately powerful. The version from the second Toney fight had a good team behind him and Sam was able to follow basic instructions well. Durability and a jab are all it took to beat Tua. If you take a look at Tua's career, he never beat a good fighter who was as tough as Peter. Oquendo was decent, but Ruiz managed to stop him. And Tua only logged good wins by stoppage. Never a decision. Not once. So it would be a tall order for Tua. He could win if Peter elected to trade hooks and got caught. But chances are, Peter would jab, rabbit punch, and stay upright--enough to win a decision. Tua would likely get skittish due to Peter's power and look for a late win instead being in destroyer mode. Tua loses most or all if put in with McCall, Mid 2000's Briggs, McCline, 90s Foreman, etc. I think his team knew that because after Ike his better opponents were conspicuously guys with crackable chins (Rahman, Moorer) or guys who weren't imposing and had feather dusters (Oquendo, Byrd). Lewis was a cashout and I think the decision to fight Byrd was largely because it was an eliminator.
The underlined is a negative? Peter was durable and powerful? Wasn't Tua? Peter beat a 38 years old 238lbs Toney fighting in two weight classes above his best. His other best win was over a 39years old Maskaev who hadn't fought in15 months! Tua beats the p*ss out of him.
If Tua never stopped a good fighter who was as durable as Peter, and never won a decision over a fighter who was as good as Peter, what does that say? You could point to the Ike fight, but Peter would be impersonating Rahman in the second fight, not Ike. btw I'd love to have seen Toney fight Tua.
Tua would be way too durable for him, has power to match his, and can keep it till the final bell. Tua within 6-7, but it'd be a damn exciting fight!
