In a 1919 interview for the Register, an Ohio publication, when asked who the greatest fighter was,Langford said :Jack Johnson, reminded that he had picked Jeffries to beat Johnson,"didn't you say that Jeffries would beat Johnson?"Sam replied "Yes,yes I did say that, but I was sore at Johnson then. You know he gave me quite a lickin a long time ago in Boston, and when he got to be champion he would never fight me again.
I was sore at him but all the time, way down in my heart,I knew that he was a great man.
The day I saw him beat Jeffries made me surer.Jeffries was in good shape that day.he never could have taken the licking he did if he wasn't in good form.
You know he was just as fast as ever, but he was like a baby when he boxed Johnson.
I tell you that Johnson was so big ,so strong,so clever. He had everything,he was never hurt, never had a black eye , or a cut, never broke a hand, and he beat the best in the world.I call that considerable doing.
He was never even tired in a fight. He just fought his own way, went about it in a business-like way and made the other fellow look foolish.
Hit? Yes sir! I never hit the floor harder in my life than the night he hit me.I thought I'd go right through the floor of the ring".
Pretty solid testimonial from the great Langford!

I still think prime langford would have beat him but it's nice to see him show johnson such respect its one of the reasons I love Sam he was modest

Johnsons power is underrated imo.
If Sam said he hit him the hardest, that says a lot.

I'll never forget that clip of Johnson shadow boxing in front of the scenery on the stage when he was in perfect shape. The way he launches those overhand power punches in quick succession was remarkable.

>>>Not one of Sam Langford's finer moments as everything he said above is wrong. Who knows why he even said it.

Johnson was hurt, he was cut, he didn't break a hand that I am aware of but did suffer broken bones in the ring. And he was tried in the ring at times too. But well-researched people here know better

And of course we know he never beat the best as Champion.

The piece comes from Clay Moyle,I'd say he is pretty well researched!lol Your response was infinitely predictable ,just as it would have been had it been a negative interview!LOL

I'm not denying Langford said it, I'm saying what Langford said about Johnson in many cases in the quote is false. Facts are facts.

Do you agree with what Langford said 100% here? Here's a chance to earn some honesty points

Right, that black eye vs. Stanley right? The reality is this, I'll trust what Sam had to say being that he fought the man and witnessed some of his fights. That seems exponentially more pertinent info that your view on it don't you think Mendoza

Johnson was no longer champ and Sam was past his prime, he had parted company with his long term manager Joe Woodman because Joe knew he was on the slide and didn't want him fighting any more , risking his eyesight. Sam had no need to tell any lies at this stage of his career. Glad everyone else enjoyed the piece!

Kurupt,

Let those where saw it and wrote the rule. Ketchel did cut Johnson, produce a lump and of course knock him down. Need proof? Okay:

https://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=LAH19091017.2.82.38.1

Three times only did it look as though he went in to knock his man out—once when Ketchel landed a clean left hook to the jaw that broke the skin and raised a lump.

They sparred for openings for long periods, and there was little real lighting through the earlier rounds. For reasons known only to himself, Johnson preferred to keep away, and when he had felt the force of Ketchel's wicked left hook he seemed more than ever ready to go slow about his work. In his dressing room after the fight, Johnson said: Johnson Praises Antagonist

"He is a good puncher and B strong man. I must say that he has given me a sorer chin than I ever had before," and he rubbed his swollen jaws reflectively while he talked. "He can take some heavy blows," continued the champion. "See there," and he showed one of his gloves, sodden with Ketchel's blood. There were several cuts on the leather. "That's where I uppercut him in the. mouth," said Johnson.

Ketchel said after he had recovered that a chance blow had finished him. "I am in better condition than Johnson now," he said. "Look at him. He Is dazed. If not for that one blow I would have beaten him."

Ketchel didn't cut Johnson, you used to say he gave him a black eye but owing to the ridicule you received ,you dropped that stance. Ketchel was in better condition than Johnson post fight? He was unconscious for over 12 minutes ,and had several teeth knocked out.LOL
