There's some validity in what you say, Cortez was fussy but Hatton's problem was he couldn't work his way inside behind punches. He wanted to rush, clinch and then start working. Some refs turn a blind eye to this but it does leave a fighter open to the ref intervening and calling break. Ricky couldn't adapt when it became clear he wasn't going to be able to employ these rush and hit tactics.

 

i think hattons performance was underrated in this fight. the announcers were worshiping mayweather. mayweather is a great fighter and would have cruised to a unanimous decision but he had a lot of help with that ko from that turnbuckle.

There is some validity in calling Cortez performance extremely biased in preventing the inside fighter from actually getting inside. Particularly on the basis that only several months later the very same Joe Cortez allowed Hopkins to hold and grab and spoil all night long against Calzaghe. So come on Mr Cortez, who paid you most?

 

A young Cortez was a good referee. It's when he coined the phrase 'I'm fair but I'm firm' he turned into sheit.

 

I have always found it quite hilarious when Hatton's fans whinge about Cortez's performance in the Mayweather fight but not a peep comes out of them concerning "referee" Dave Parriss' far more biased and incompetent display in the Tszyu-Hatton fight.

 

A true champion can beat you with an inside or outside game, its a bit of a corny phrase but i'm a firm believer that..

Reminds me of ward, Kov did his best to stop his inside game and he still found a way to win. That's what champions do!

Hatton was one dimensional, so is kovalev don't get me wrong both of them are great fighters!, One dimensional might even be a bit harsh and borderline disrespectful my bad they both have a plan A and a plan B maybe even a C etc HOWEVER This truly great ones can be summed up with one great quote.

Hatton was my idol growing up and I was devastated after this fight... Looking back he did really well but Mayweather was just different class on the day
