That's a more intriguing match up than Floyd vs Loma 130. To be honest the Pride of the Philippines aka the Pacman takes Lomas head off at 130. I don't even feel thats Manny best weight.
Floyds length and speed would have been tough to get over. But Loma has only had what.. 7-8 fights? Its something that were comparing him to Floyd right now. Lets see how Loma looks in a few years.
To be fair they do that with everyone. Once the new kid hits the block they d*ck ride till he loses at that point hes a bum
The other great pride of the Philippines Flash Elorde would have given Floyd nightmares at 130. Flash is up there with Floyd and Arguello as the greatest at 130. Stylistically I think Flash Elorde gives Floyd a tougher fight than Arguello. This content is protected
Armstrong never won a title at 130 but he was destructive at that weight. I don't think anybody would have been able to handle him at 130 tbh.
My biggest complaint about using Armstrong who was an incredible fight. Is it's so far back and athletes have "evolved". Now whether that's a plus or minus is subjective
He pretty much rendered the division irrelevant for a while, by pretty much cleaning out the jr lightweight ranks during his initial run (beating former champs like Bass and Klick in the process). It's a situation that's akin to Charles being ranked number one @ LH, even though he never got the chance to fight for a championship at the weight.
Just talking purr skill I think Loma could be up there with the most skilled fighters I've seen in recent decades. Like James Toney, Marco Antonio Barrera, Ricardo Lopez. Skill wise it's possible that he's actually on that skill level. But I dont think think Loma could handle the reach, speed and power of Mayweather to go with Mayweather's own skill.
Completely agree with this. But, there's a new sheriff in town...Lomachenko, who will prove himself to be TBE at 130.
In terms of sports science boxing has evolved for the better from the era of Armstrong. In some areas it's completely declined. This isn't a golden era of talent like it was back then. Sure there's a handful of special fighters in this era but it's seriously watered down. There was more boxing clubs back then and more boxers so there was a deeper talent pool. In terms of techniques boxing has changed but not exactly for the better. The bigger gloves means boxers block rather as parry punches and infighting is basically a lost art now due to stricter referee's. Fighters also spar and box less nowadays so this has a big impact on skill and ring knowledge development. Fighters of the golden era's fought a vast array of styles so the best of the best were brilliant ring generals. Some modern fans think Floyd had an evolved style but he's really a throwback to stylists of old. James Toney was considered a throwback when he came on the scene as well. To prove my point watch George Benton. This content is protected
