Been rewatching a bunch of old boxing matches lately. When talks about biggest waste of potential, a lot of people bring up Hamed's name, I am also one of those people who thinks Hamed could have been an ATG if he had more discipline. But I can't stop thinking about how good Mayorga could have been if he was truly dedicated. You are born with power, and Mayorga just... hits so hard. These are purely just on my own gut feelings and none are factual, but I always though that he nevee took training serious, and he just fought with instinct like he would in the streets. He is just... one of the best street fighters ever, so good in fact, it even works in the high level competition of the pros. You guys' thoughts?
Mayorga doesn't hits that hard, he only has wins against Forrest, besides that he was destroyed by Tito, Cotto, Mosley, Oscar and every other good fighter, he overarchieved, because he only had heavy hands and a good chin, with zero boxing iq, slow with hands and feet and an awful defense. Francisco Bojado, now that's a wasted natural ability.
Depends on your meaning on "waste of natural talent" - whether that was a promising young prospect who never reached their championship potential or if talking about a champion who should've, but never reached an ATG level. Off the top of my head I look back at 3 different fighters who campaigned in the late 80's into the late 90's- James Toney, Riddick Bowe and Pernell Whitaker. It seems a little crazy when I was typing those names that I'd mention those guys, but if Toney actually stuck to a strict regimen (both dietary and physical activity) between fights he could've easily gone down as a top 20 ATG. He had that type of skillset, especially around 1991-1992. What a complete fighter he was. In the case of Sweet Pea, he probably lost at least 2 years of his absolute prime and around 5 years in total where he could've been fighting (and dominating,) had he not been dealing with chronic drug issues throughout the 90's. He was a defensive master, and his prime should've been a lot longer than it ended up being. A fighter like DLH, while great at the lighter weights, shouldn't have been able to win so many rounds even against an aging Whitaker. Pernell is an ATG but he had the chance to be one of the 5-10 best fighters ever P4P. He was on that level. I'm not going to into Bowe because my post will get even more long-winded.
Kermit Cintron - I always felt he was a waste and could've been a lot more accomplished if had more desire and discipline .
Good call It feels harsh to say the word waste about a fighter you love but Emannuel Augustus never winning a world title is worth a mention
I'm gonna have to go with JCC jr. Has one of the best fighters in the world as his father and an iron chin as well but just can't focus.
Joan Guzman, sounds strange considering he ended up a 3 weight world champion but I honestly believe he could have done so much more than he did.
Mike Tyson and Gerry Cooney were the biggest wastes of talent in boxing history because they became coke heads both still had decent careers tho I often wonder and theorise that the lost generation of the 80's were ruined by cocaine Hell of a drug ha ha
Bojado starts around the same time with Cotto. Everybody in the industry considered him to be the more talented of the 2. Cotto going down to be a HOFer winning titles in 4 weight class. Bojado stumbled before his first title fight.
