I would not write off Bob Fitzsimmons. Game & Cunning as they come and with a punch that greatly exceeded any of Marciano opponents.

Corbett in a large ring could also win

Along with the names already listed Spinks has a good chance. How much did he weigh when he fought Homes/Cooney.

I think a prime Qwai would be a very tough fight. His speed, defense, power and reach advantage.

1949-10-10 : Rocky Marciano 180¼ lbs beat Ted Lowry 177¾ lbs by UD in round 10 of 10
• Location: Rhode Island Auditorium, Providence, Rhode Island, USA
• Referee: Ben Maculan
• See also: Rocky Marciano vs. Ted Lowry (2nd meeting)
Michael J. Thomas of the Providence Journal wrote, "Marciano did not win the fight. This reporter gave it to Lowry, six rounds to four.”

The crowd of 3,696 booed the decision and some wondered if Lowry had thrown the fight. "There were some questions as to whether Lowry, who had come close to knocking out Marciano in the second, third and fourth rounds, deliberately bogged down in his attack after the fourth stanza," Thomas wrote. "Lowry stopped using his uppercut after the fourth. He went into a shell and only occasionally landed power shots. He seemed to be carrying Marciano."

In his book Rocky Marciano: The Rock of His Times, Russell Sullivan wrote the following:

"It was Lowry, not Marciano, who was on the verge of scoring an early knockout, stinging Marciano with two terrific rights in the first round and then rocking him with two mighty uppercuts in the second. By the fourth, a staggered Marciano seemed just one punch away from being knocked out. But then, inexplicably, Lowry stopped fighting and retreated into a shell despite warnings from the referee to open up and a cascade of boos from the crowd. To many, it appeared that Lowry was deliberately carrying Marciano. Was foul play afoot? Was Lowry getting paid to lose? Or was he merely tiring? Whatever the reason, a revived Marciano managed to rally in the late rounds even though many of his punches missed their mark or lacked force. On the basis of his aggressiveness and constant punching, Marciano won a unanimous decision from the judges. Most observers felt, however, that Lowry should have won."
Lowry, who earned $2,500 for the fight, denied he threw the fight. "I beat Rocky that night and that’s it," he said. "He changed his strategy in the fifth round and made a fight of it, but I won two of the last six rounds after winning the first four. It was a hometown decision."

Rocky Marciano vs. Roland LaStarza (1st meeting)

1950-03-24 : Rocky Marciano 183¼ lbs beat Roland LaStarza 187 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10
• Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
• Referee: Jack Watson 5-5
• Judge: Arthur Schwartz 5-4
• Judge: Artie Aidala 4-5
• See Also: Rocky Marciano vs. Roland LaStarza (2nd meeting)
A crowd of 13,658 paid $53,733. LaStarza (37-0) received approximately $13,000, and Marciano (25-0) got about $8,000.

The Associated Press reported: "Rocky, a short-armed, slope-shouldered battler won the fight with a sensational punching display in the fourth round when he floored LaStarza. A low blow In the eighth round cost the free swinging Rocky a clear-cut triumph. He belted handsome Rollie all over the lot in the frame and hurt him with another one of his vicious rights to the jaw."

Jessie Abramson of the New York Daily Herald called the decision "paper thin and exceedingly odd." According to newspaper reports, it was condemned around ringside as a miscarriage of justice.

So clearly Ted Lowry a 177 pounder beat him and Roland LaStarza a 180 pounder beat him. Any half way decent 180 pounder who wasn't mob controlled or 80 years old would beat him.

You people still living in your fantasy world idolizing Rocky Marciano the biggest joke and most overrated boxer in history really need to stop and get a life.

I feel your diffidence in expressing your opinions, and your reluctance to drive home your points with forcefulness is hampering your delivery somewhat.LOL

Touching story. I copied and paste that writers of the time thought about the fights. I proved my point. 2 180 pound guys beat him. As usual with people you have no point. I guess you can type "Lol" to somebody who cares and go back praising your dead boxing hero Rocky Marciano.

I think you need to go back and read some of my posts on Marciano.I posted the very quotes you have a couple
of times previously and I believe the consensus of posters would call me a Marciano hater!
Oh, and my point was that you have only one volume, full blast! You are "in your face combative " with every post you make!

Nearly forgot LOL!

McVey is the biggest Rocky fan boy this forum has ever seen!

How will he deal with the close fights Rock had early in his career?

McVey's idol has let him down!

I don't rank Dempsey or Rocky at HW any more. I rank them as sub 200 pounders.

In that category the only man I rank above Rocky is Dempsey. I would favour him because he has more dimensions to his game, looks better on film and was ranked higher by a lot of those who saw them both fight.

My top 5 in this category

Dempsey
Rocky
Holyfield
Walcott
Patterson.

My top 5 at LHW

Jones Jr
Charles
Langford
Tunney
Moore

Everyone on that list has chances of beating Rocky.

He has beaten Charles, Moore and Walcott so i'll remove them. Dempsey has already been mentioned. Patterson isn't durable or evasive enough so I'm removing him.

Dempsey, Holyfield, Jones Jr, Langford, Tunney and honourable mentions for Spinks, Bivins, Conn. Of those I would favour only Dempsey but the rest have realistic chances of victory.
