The optics looked bad regardless. It wasn't a push, he got hit with at least 3 solid hard punches, but the last 2 didn't land but the other punches likely did their damage. So he gets knocked out the ring like what people have seen from boxing scenes in movies and tv, gets up, looks dazed and out on his feet, looks and moves like a geriatric old man, not aware of the 20 count, has to sit down because moving is just too much stress. Looked like he needed some nurses to come out and change his depends. That's a bad way to go out. He likely wanted the ropes to be that loose too so he can lean back.

Agreed, but there's something more warrior-like going out on a loss, somehow. And he gave so much to the sport. I mean, he even gave the haters ammunition too with his injury claim and suggestion it was a push... all five 'pushes'. So it just means we can debate him endlessly on here. lol You'd think the haters would let it go now he's been punched into retirement, or at least give him a day's grace. But I suspect we're gonna see the name 'Hopkins' headlining a few threads for a while yet. Yeah, he was flawed and, yes, he rarely just accepted a loss for what it was but that's what drove him on I guess, utter single-mindedness.

Punchers are the only fighters that old fighters stand a chance again because simply the speed is down to their level. Passed his middleweight days, Hopkins has made a legend for himself beating punchers through his dirty tactics and boxing skillset. Its against the speedier, agile, and non-stationary fighter that Hopkins has had major trouble with. Skillset fighters without much power always trouble the older fighter. Joe Smith is actually the perfect type for a fighter of Hopkins style to dissect. It simply did not work out for Hopkins because there comes a point in a fighters career that his speed and reflexes just cant match even the fighters with below average speed and reflexes. To Hopkins credit, Joe Smith wasn't a pushover, so I give him credit for taking a challenge for him in his last fight.

Hopkins shenanigans in this fight after he got legitimately knocked out doesn't hurt his standing as a great fighter. What it does do however is shine a bright light to other fights in his past where he's pulled quit jobs by claiming he was fouled and suffered an injury. When the going has gotten tough enough to where Hopkins has sensed he had bitten off more than he can chew, he's staged phony foul scenes in a ring so he could walk out of there without the fight coming to a completion. There are many Hopkins fans that have not been willing to admit this in the past. Though it doesn't take away that he was a great fighter, this fight with Joe Smith here puts a nail in that coffin that Hopkins all through his career was a stage setting quitter when things weren't going as planned, and like it or not, that my friend will forever be part of his legacy.
The last two punches landed. The 2nd to last punch, the right hook, didn't land flush, but it grazed his chin, and seemed to land right inside Hopkins right arm pit. The last punch certainly landed flush, the left hook, which was an amazing punch because Bernard was already in between the ropes at that point, and it landed flush right on his right cheek. For that last punch to land flush with Hopkins in that position I have to say was impressive.
