Why cuban fighters become lazy in pros?

money...makes some people lazy

 

I think a lot of the guys with the best amateur careers are just tired of how hard they had to work coming up. They were competing almost every week for years and now they have money, are their own boss, and the whips in their hand instead of on their back. It's hard to maintain a super work ethic if you aren't driven by poverty and they all feel like they already paid their dues and made their bones. They don't love the sport anymore. It's all business; so they want to get well paid for doing the least amount of work possible.

 

How lazy would most of you guys here be if you have half a dozen women to choose from each night and 6 digits in the bank? Why work?

The problem is promoters take the young cubans and offer them tons of money and a crazy lifestyle -- fearing that if they don't offer that then the fighter will sing with another promoter. Its too big a lifestyle and too much money for these young kids and they quickly turn into lazy SOBs.

 

That's what happens when you taste things you never did before

 

one only needs to watch the 30 for 30 for orlando hernandez and his brother.....not just saying it happens to cubans...but can to any nationality when they come from being poor...all of the sudden these guys have a sports car and a nice home...and can afford to eat out almost every night of the week....theyve never seen anything like it

I think the reason is because many Cuban greats will openly admit boxing is not their preferred sport but something they were forced to do. They were forced to live that life style as amateurs had very few and undesirable alternatives as well.

Also it's the being rich from poverty factor. Still when you look at a lot of Cuban's at the moment, Gamboa, Rigondeux, Lara don't really seem that lazy to me.
