Azumah Nelson v Barry McGuigan in 1985. Who wins?

I never got too see either of this. Only a couple of azumah Nelson fights when he was old.

 

Nelson hands down. It wouldve been competitve for the first five rounds but after than Mcguigan would get countered to death and then STARCHED by Nelsons heavy hands.

For those who weren't around back then to understand the context. Nelson chased and famously called out mcguigan in a post fight interview the same way Rigondeaux does to Frampton today.

Mcguigan avoided Nelson like the plague.

McGuigan was good, but caught Pedroza at the perfect time.

Nelson was a bit better overall.

 

It's even for six than Nelson starts to counter very effectively and opens up a cut over the eye and bloodied mcguigans nose, by round 10 Barry is very behind and his nose broken his eyes swelling shut.in the 11th as the sadist Barney Eastwood watches on Nelson pounces and stretches Mcguigan for the ten count.Mcguiigan retires

 

McGuigan was made for Nelson come forward fighter and as for Barney Eastwood he knew it as well that is why he didn't want the fight to happen.Nelson was a monster at 126 lb and after he did this to Pat Cowdell 1985,it made the fight even less likely to ever happen,Cowdell was a good operator who had gone the distance with Salvador Sanchez.It was a icing of a KO and also put talk of the fight to bed.They didn't want anything to do with Nelson.

Was a big McGuigan fan back in the day...but Nelson was excellent...Nelson would have stopped Barry in 8-10 rounds, maybe earlier.

 

Nelson was p4p one of the toughest fighters to beat head to head in his prime.

 

Nelson would have crushed him. Barry was lucky this fight was never made. It was on its way before he lost to Cruz.

 

McGuigans son is his trainer. Barry is his manager

 

Amazingly short prime McGuigan had. At the world class level, it was comprised of two fights, Laporte and Pedroza. Not sure what happened to him.

Assuming the fight takes place in that few month's timespan, I still pick Nelson, though through the years I have begun to appreciate McGuigan a bit more than I did then. I was a Nelson guy all the way, and so rooted against McGuigan thinking he was just an overhyped feel-good story. Truth is, he wasn't too bad for a short period.

That said, Nelson, TKO 7 or 8.

 

Don't forget McGuigan also beat the very good Bernard Taylor.

The heat and Steve Cruz ruined McGuigan. He was never the same after that fight.

But, yeah Nelson was always better and would stop prime McGuigan late.

 

Nelson, imo, was considerably better. Nelson by ko somewhere inside of seven or eight rounds.

 

Nelson would have hammered Barry

"she is scared to fight me" was a quote Azumah used quite a lot at the time

 

I believe that this fight would go similar to the second Nelson- Fenech fight. Azumah would hurt McGuigan early on and then proceed to give him a beating that will be punctuated by a stoppage around the 8th round. McGuigan's style was all wrong for facing Nelson who was superior in almost every facet of the game.
