Tokyo Douglas vs Joe Frazier

I have either followed or reviewed the careers of both Mike Tyson and Joe Frazier, and I see no conclusive evidence that one had a better chin than the other. Is it possible that one of them had better long range stamina , mental resolve, etc? Perhaps. But a greater ability to take a direct shot on the chin from a hard puncher ? Nay...

 

Depends a bit on the ref, I think. On how much he'd let Buster hold.

Tyson only fought in spurts after the first couple of rounds (as he always did) while Joe at his very best was as relentless in his pressure as any HW ever. If the ref is lenient on holding, the much bigger and stronger Douglas might slow the action down enough to retain the initiative. With a stricter ref I just don't see Buster holding Joe off long enough. Even in Manilla he was an effing machine. At his peak...

Buster looked just about as good as I've seen any HW during the first 2-3 rds and he might put the slow starting Frazier down during this time, but I don't think he has the power to keep on bouncing him Foreman style.

 

Just read the long discussion regarding best chin... My personal take is that Frazier would be in worse shape taking some of the shots Tyson did by Bruno, Ruddock and Lewis, but I don't think he'd gass and be KO'd by Douglas as Tyson did.

But '96 roided Holy punched harder than any version of Ali. That's just so clear to the eye to me. Peak Ali was a sharper and better composite puncher than that version of Holy, though. But Evander hit ****ing hard in that fight.

Silly. Mercer was a nothing and a nobody. Nondescript hwt who is already lost to time. Foreman was a true ATG and would obliterate Mercer within 5 rounds. A massacre.

 

Frazier. Douglas was very underrated before that fight - but tends to be overrated because of that fight.

Tyson was woefully underprepared because he didn't take training seriously for a fighter who definitely had the tools to test him - though I think was not equipped to beat MT if both men had had a good night.

And that's not to make excuses for Tyson, or take away from Douglas' victory. Boxing is about mental strength, too, and Tyson lacked in that department. He has no one but himself to blame for what he squandered - but the same goes for Douglas. JD had the potential to achieve so much more than he did in boxing.

Frazier cannot be accused of lacking will, heart, desire in the way that both Tyson (sometimes) and Douglas (frequently) did.

So....for all of the reasons above, I'd say Tyson beats Frazier on both their best nights. Frazier beats Tyson on many other nights. Tyson beats Douglas on a good night, but JD's style still causes problems. And Frazier beats Douglas on any given night.

Superior in terms of what? The only thing I see Frazier doing better than Tyson is his work rate, and even that isn't much greater a difference.

Chins? Who are you kidding!? Tyson has the better mandible. That shouldn't be up for debate.

You've got to think like this. If Foreman staggered Tyson like Bruno did in the first round would he be so cautious and defensive like Frank was? Would he fcuk, he would wipe Tyson out in devastating fashion just like he did Frazier.......

 

How many fighters was Frazier knocked out by??? You do know Tyson was stopped by a fighter less than 220lb you absolute moron.....

 

Fraziers heart, will to win and desire to overcome are at a ATG level. Much better than Tyson in this regard. Certainly physically Tyson was the superior talent.

 

Frazier's heart is better than any other heavyweight. Dude had ballz of steel. But sometimes that attribute doesn't help.
