Same thread is on General forum where most pick Povetkin to batter and KO Holmes (prime4prime). I'd like to listen to Classic poster's opinions as they are usually far more knowlegable than the guys from General forum. Who takes it, and why? I guess it would be Holmes with his far superior jab and footwork. Holmes is also very cautious boxer and very brave at the same time.
First of all, that thread has an undercurrent to it, which is that it was started by a sh*t stirring troll, and people said things in a certain way to send him into fits. On pedigree Holmes would have to be favoured over Povetkin. That said, I think Povetkin could be a pretty hard fight for Holmes. He has a sturdy chin, and savage combinations up close. He isn't too bad at cutting off the ring and has an excellent gas tank*. Lately he has been looking destructive. Let's put it like this: if he manages to get Holmes hurt, he will finish him. If I had to put money on it, probably a Holmes decision, but I would not be surprised if Sasha won, either. * Possibly helped by "special vitamins" it has to be said.
Holmes would beat him convincingly. Sasha is overrated. Who did he ever really beat? I guess Chagaev, and that fight was close. I regard Povetkin as one of the best of this era, but outside of Chagaev he never beat a genuine top 5 fighter and lost every round against Wlad. Holmes defended his title 20 times. This is a no brainer. Holmes dec, around 10-2, 9-3.
Yes I know that Sasha hits hard and is pretty good finisher, but Holmes has all-time great recuperative ability. Not only Shavers or Snipes fights, but also Weaver 1, and especially Tim Witherspoon. Tim had Holmes badly hurt in round 9, and Larry somehow survived. Witherspoon is famous as destructive puncher, he has KO'd cold numerous opponents, even in his mid 40s. Even at 45 Holmes survived McCall's round 9 (lost in 10-8 on cards which cost him a draw that night). McCall hit him with everything, and he's a hard hitter too
Could be. Holmes is an ATG for a reason. On the other hand, Povetkin is a level above most of the guys Holmes fought, and that includes Witherspoon. It's fairly hard to compare some of these guys because of a lack of common opponents. On the one hand I can see Larry busting him up with the jab. On the other I can see Povetkin turning it midrounds into the sort of brawling affair that he excels at. Like I said, you'd have to favour Holmes, but not by too long a stretch.
I believe Povetkin would be knocked out cold by shavers and norton with that being said I would go with a Holmes UD. Too skilled and too durable for Povetkin
What the hell are you talking about. Povetkin v Holmes total destruction job by Larry.Povitkin struggled with Huck blowing like a steam engine.Povitkin wouldn't last four rnds with a peak Holmes total joke.
The Shavers fights prove there would be no chance whatsoever for Povetkin. Larry beats the gas tank clean out of him and Povetkin swigs left hooks at nothin but thin air.
If Holmes brings his "A" game he beats povetkin decisively either by wide decision or late stoppage. If he's having an off night then he barely takes it close but still wins either way
What's a Povetkin? Take away his roids and what would you have? Holmes wins via stoppage in 10 rounds. A one sided fight.
Chambers was top 5. Perez was top 10. Takam was either top 10 or top 15. Huck was top 5 at 200 pounds. Duhapas was top 15ish. Boswell, Wawrzyck, and Charr were like 15-30.
Povetkin tested positive for meldonium and ostarine. Neither are steroids and neither were tested for when Holmes was fighting. Compared to the fighters Holmes fought during his reign, Povetkin would be tier one with a case for being the best. Holmes didn't beat his biggest challenges easily. It would probably be a back and forth fight with Holmes winning a decision because of his jab.
This is what newbie casuals think of when they see Larry Homles being mentioned. Just a guy who pranced around the ring popping a jab. No. Larry shuts out face first Povetkin with spear like right hands and right hand pull counters , piston like body to head combinations , ripping uppercuts , blinding left hooks. Holmes was a mean motherfuber and people forget that. At 43 with no legs he beat the Povetkin of the 90's easily. Dominated him. Late 70's Holmes makes an absolute fool out of Povetkin.
