No Tunney was a light heavy.Liston was a 7 fight novice who suffered a broken jaw, yet only lost by split decision yet you think this is a valid comparison?

It might have , then again he might have run into Sharkey when the Gob was having a good night and lost a decision, and his stock would have plummeted!

In my mind his stock would have gone up a lot, if he had beaten a handful of the top contenders of the period.

If he had beaten Risko, Sharkey, and Stribling, but lost to Schmeling, then there would be a top ten argument!

That is basically what a top ten heavyweight is!

Another stupid thread about a 170 pound fighter who best win of his career came against a 190 pounder so apparently that makes him a heavyweight or a top 10 heavyweight. Gene Tunny isn't a top 10,000 heavyweights of all time because he wasn't a heavyweight and never beat a heavyweight.

I just don't see any reasonable criteria for placing him top ten.

He beat Dempsey but didnt do much else. Kinda like ranking Fury top ten due to his victory over Wlad.

The man's a muppet, incapable of reasoned debate he thinks if you insult everyone you win the argument.

I imagine you yourself were a little like that until maturity tempered you?

That was Liston's eighth fight, not seventh. The Machen fight should also be considered. Machen, though he lost, easily went the distance and gave Liston a somewhat competitive fight. Yes, Gene would have a good chance of beating a man who seemed to struggle against skillful boxers.

He could do worse than attend group for a while.

Him and CombatdeBoxeo and a few other passionate, but puzzled souls.
