It sounds to me as though Ward is getting ready to run for the hills instead of rematching Kovalev: "I really just got to take my time right now because I really don't have to fight anymore," he says. "I've accomplished pretty much everything that I've wanted to accomplish. It's not about the money anymore, it's just because god has blessed me to still have the ability to do it and I still love it. I just really got to take my time right now and make sure that every decision that I make and every fight that I take is the right situation because if it's not, I don't know if it makes sense to continue on." http://www.rollingstone.com/sports/andre-ward-unsure-if-he-wants-to-continue-boxing-career-w458879
Im not liking how that sounds . I was defending Ward saying he will indeed rematch Kovalev and try to redeem himself .
I'm almost past caring at this point. Almost. 175 is really hot at the moment and I can do without the cloud that is Ward hovering over it. He's a boring fighter and has a bad attitude so if he wants you go, then just go. No one's gonna beg him to stay.
VERY disappointing stuff from Ward recently. Going into that fight I was really excited -one of those rare top-level fights where I liked both men and didn't care about the outcome - just wanted to see the fight. I admired Ward's skill and professionalism, and Kovalev's hard-scrabble work ethic. But since Ward was given the victory he has acted in the least honorable manner he could. Denigrating his opponent, acting like a diva in negotiations, threatening to retire if he doesn't get his own way. He has been the epitome of a 'bad winner'. For the record, I think it is VERY HARD to make a case for Ward having won. Taking more shots (more hard shots), and being dropped by the unified champion, while landing less and lighter, is not usually the way to get a victory in boxing. So his egomaniacal behavior after the fight is really a disgrace. It pains me to say it, but I am no longer a fan. Which is not really the reaction you expect after watching someone get a 'career defining victory'.
I've constantly predicted that Andre would retire and he should do so. He made as much as he is going to get from a 175 fight. Neither him or Kovalev generate enough money for him to make more in a rematch, so that's out the window. I think he wants everyone to be disappointed in his retirement and offer him stuff like he was Mayweather, but he knows better. Might as well go out undefeated, before that Smith guy gives him the 3 punch special that lifted Hopkins clean out the ring. All that wishy washy stuff will get you hurt.
A lot of fighters say things like this after winning a fight of that magnitude, he just won his career defining fight so emotions are high right now. That said Ward won't run from Kovalev, he'll rematch him and it will be a completely different fight next time, since Ward will know what to expect.
Ya ward knows he lost the fight and so does hunter , their words in the last few rounds show it and ward was fighting to survive for the majority of that fight
....... And Kovalev will also know what to expect. Or is Ward the only fighter capable of learning from a fight?
It goes both ways, but let's not forget here. Ward is a man that hasn't lost since he was a boy. Losing isn't in his DNA.
Losing is in everyone's DNA. Most people thought he lost the last fight. Granted, the 3 men that matter didn't agree with that.
I thought 1 point either way was a good decision. I had it for Ward by a point, but some people are winners and others are chicken dinners!
I had it wider to Kov. Just want the rematch out the way so the division can move on. Ward won't take a paycut so I'm not sure if it'll happen. He needs to decide.
I thought so too, but another poster pointed out that he did lose a few amateur fights en route to a 115-5 amateur record, e.g. http://www.15rounds.com/q-a-with-andre-ward-121410/
