Shannon Briggs & Fres Oquendo Ordered To Reach Deal By WBA

Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs will face Fres Oquendo for the vacant "regular" WBA heavyweight title. This has been confirmed Nicaraguan consultant Ricardo Rizzo, who represents the company Heavyweight Factory - who are based in Florida.

"We finally got the fight for Briggs. It will be a great opportunity to be crowned against a fighter like Oquendo, who has been inactive for more than two years because of a lawsuit he had filed against the sanctioning body," Rizzo explained from Miami.

"Precisely because of that legal demand, Oquendo will receive this opportunity to fight for the vacant title with Briggs ... We got the fight and the company that I represent, Heavyweight Factory, will be in charge of organizing it at the Hard Rock or some stage in Jamaica. We just have to define the date of the fight."

On Wednesday, Rizzo received the official confirmation of the fight from George Martinez, president of the WBA's World Championships Committee, in which he invited both parties to reach an agreement to carry out this fight for the vacant heavyweight title.

It is explained, that both were selected because they are the highest ranked available contenders, with Briggs in 4th place and Oquendo in 5th.

They will have no more than 30 days to negotiate the match, and the winner will have the obligation to defend the title against Russia's Alexander Ustinov, who is ranked third under the WBA.

 

I need Briggs to win this one!! Let's go Champ!!!! Let's go Champ!!!

What a sad fight................both fighters are way over the hill...............Briggs might win this one, but why torture boxing fans will such a fight? Why not Briggs Vs. Wilder, Briggs would probably knock Wilder out and it would be fun, but Wilder is afraid of Briggs..............Wilder needs a wino from the alley, which Briggs is not quite there yet.................Boxing org.'s are killing boxing!

 

The WBA are legally obligated by court order that Oquendo is the mandatory to the title.

I wish I had a stamp saying that so I didn't have to type it every time someone wonders why Oquendo got the fight.

 

Neither Oquendo nor Briggs deserve to be in the top ten, but then look at all the sad bums they have been ranking, what a joke! Boxing org.'s are really bad for boxing, what about the best fighting the best? What about earning a title shot for a change. What about Wilder defending his title 5 times in a row, against bums, unknowns, yes, 5 voluntary title defenses!

 

What about.......the court order?

 

Oquendo still has enough to outlast and outwork Briggs.

Unless Briggs lands a bomb in the first 3 rounds this is an easy night for Oquendo.

 

Good. I wanna see some goddamn hype for once. These boxers are acting like accountants and not entertainers. Briggs is a showman and boxing needs showman right now. These guys wonder why nobody knows them. Lets' go Briggs!! A true Cinderella Man.

whats sad is that i think the 43 year old who will not hve boxed on nearly 3 years when the fight takes place might win this. /and h
briggs is only a 2 or 3 round fighter /after that he has shot his load barley able to keep his arms up

his punches from then on are arm punchs only
oquendo always new what he was doing / will pop out constant jab /occasional soft right hand and win on points.

The WBA has really outdone themselves with this matchup. It already was the laughinstock belt in the HW division and now they've gone waaaay overboard to soldify that position.
Of course Oquendo's court order is in place here, but they are indirectly to blame for that situation occuring as well.
