Yes,fair comments. Biggs seemed to see the one armed win as the peak of his career. The Duvas were frustrated with Biggs, there was always some issue. After his first pro fight he checked into rehab, later there was a car crash which caused a wrist injury, then the collar bone v Sims. Interestingly Tyson turned pro a few weeks after Biggs but by the time they met he had twice as many fights. After the collar bone was given time Biggs had 3 quick fights against low ranks and failed to impress. It was at that point they arranged to get some names on his CV and talked to Tysons camp about securing a fight.Biggs was marketable as he was unbeaten and Olympic champ. It must be recalled that there werent many marketable 'big fights' on the horizon for Tyson at that point ( after Biggs they dragged Holmes outta retirement). Biggs fought Snipes on the undercard of Smith/Witherspoon and won on points. He put Snipes down early but it was close fight.Biggs didnt seem to be improving.Next he fought Bey on the Tyson/Smith undercard and was boxing nicely until deciding to start infighting with Bey in round 3.Biggs always moved well for a round or two and then slowed.Infighting was a poor move and he got a terrible cut.He threw the kitchen sink at Bey in round 6 and stoped him.It was the most aggresive i ever saw him. The Duva's mustve been mighty relieved. He shudda fought Mike next up, but they replace him with Pinklon and Biggs fought Mike a few months later.Biggs actually had a tune up fight first v Lorenzo Boyd. Theres no way that cut had time to heal and it opened again against Tyson, further proof that they were cashing him in. It works both ways though , because Biggs earned good $ that night and as ive said earlier they were still with him for his next fight a year later (Damiani). When he lost that with a cut on the other eye is when they parted company. He had Jimmy Young in his corner for a while but was outmuscled by Mason Bowe and Lewis as he became a well paid opponent. He had a few wins against guys like Occasio and Marin ,which were similar types of fights to those he had on the way up v Tillis and Snipes. I dont think like some that the Tyson fight finished him in one go, i just think it was the start of his decline. The worst beating i saw him take was for the North American title in Las Vegas v Mike Hunter over 12 rounds. He was expected to win this but lost heavily. He also featured in that 3 round heavyweight tournament that they had.I wonder if anyone remembers that ? He lost to eventual winner Tubbs , in the semi final.
Was looking for that tournament for years on youtube.Don't know if its ever been put up well check now
And YES i agree he got his shot without facing a real top 10 guy.(Although Sims did have a 5 rank with WBA) Tillis/Sims/Snipes/Bey wasn',t a bad list though for your first 15 fights ? He did seem to catch a good version of them all. Bey had a poor run before Biggs. I guess Biggs lack of firepower meant these guys weren't frightened to give it a go.Snipes in particular looked good and his record right after Biggs was a long winning streak.
It was Collins that went into a deep depression and died in a car accident, which his father thinks was suicide.
Saw the movie about that fight. Basically took Billy Collins life. On that note Margarito vs Cotto I. Although like the above mentioned fight tainted by dodgt handwraps.
One thing people should appreciate is tge bravery if the boxers who take the beatings. It puts the quit job Walters did against Loma in perspective. Sure, he was about to take a beating but he had a puncher's chance and hadn't been knocked down. Irresponsible and he should have been fined.
Boxing has had a multitude of fights that should've been stopped way before it actually was. Robinson vs Lamotta the last fight, Ali vs Terrell, Holmes vs Ali, Holmes vs Cobb (the fight that made Cosell stop announcing boxing matches) Duran vs Moore (could easily been stopped 2 rds earlier without protest from fans) Tysons complete brutializing of Biggs. And Many,Many others.... And those are the fights between between world class competitors.
^ Yep and another one, I think the worse I ever saw was Bowe v Gotota in the second fight as well. I felt a bit sickened watching it, watching a man getting brain damaged. Bowe needed saving from himself as he wasn't admitting defeat. I'd rank that with Ali Holmes to be honest. fights like that you are seeing a man ended, no coming back.
It was watching dempsey v willard tht got me in to boxing in the first place. Watching that fight as short as it was on video, I can still recall the exitment of dempsey savage blasting. So it's number one for me
If I remember correctly, Calzaghe came back to his corner after the 1st or 2nd round and said to his old man: "He's f**king s**t"
