Did Hagler dare prove to be great?

  1. Yes, you can prove to be great in 1 weight class

    90.3%
  2. No, you have to move up. Broner dared to be great. Hagler didn't

    5.8%
  3. Golovkin hater here, this one's got me stumped

The difference is Hagler fought in the one of the best MW eras, GGG fights in one of the weakest. If he stays at 160 theres no way his legacy can come close to Haglers. If GGG is as great as he's made out to be surely going up 8lbs to career defining fights is not that much of a big ask. Beating a DeGale or a Jack would make a huge statement but he seems happy chasing the smaller guys like Brook and Canelo.

At this point a better comparison I think would be Hopkins as GGG's career isn't over yet. Hopkins goals was to unify all the belts and have the middleweight record, and it took him far more fights, and was far older than GGG when he did it. Also his best foes at Middleweight was moving up from lower weight divisions.

Yet BlizzyBumFluff's bunch had no issue whatsoever with him, not 'daring to be great' at the time. Plus he was offered a career high pay day v Calzaghe (and it was a serious offer unlike Ward's to GGG) but choose to fight his mandatory instead.

Maybe don't enter my threads if you can't pull up a pew, role your sleeves up and actually have 1 single solitary refute to the point I'm making.

This is a boxing forum. A subject you seem to know nothing about. There is more need for me here than you.

Hagler fought in the era where diva attitude do not stop big fights from happening. Leonard hearns and Duran are arguably bigger stars than him, kudos to all parties that the fights were made and together with the dominance he had make him a great. So you don't need to move up to be considered great, but quality of opposition has to be taken into consideration. However, if Hagler would had move up, he would be consider greater.
Ggg however doesn't have the luxury that Hagler had, the only name that stands out is canelo, and canelo could not carry hearns Duran and Leonard jockstraps. Both ggg and canelo playing divas and stall the fight, both put money above legacy. A win over canelo would not put ggg in the same level as Hagler.
At a glance it looks similar but it is actually not. Hagler was a great without moving up, he could have better legacy if he dare to move up for Spinks. Ggg at this stage is not a great, beating canelo will not make him a great either but probably punch his ticket to canestota. He needs to move up for better legacy.

Leaping the divides of weight divisions is way more commonplace now than it was 30-40 years ago for all sorts of reasons. Most of Hagler's career was before the inception of the SMW catagory so to move up a division, the only option would have been LHW. And he had an array of elite boxers to take on at 160, with the SRL super fight the single most significant reason why he stayed at 160 instead of chasing the 168 belts, which were less prestigious back then, because they lacked the linear aspect.

Then there's the advancement in chemical assistance, legitimate nutrition, and strength and conditioning which makes moving up the divisions way easier now than back then. If someone is trying to deflect from GG by making a comparison to Hagler, they've failed.

Look at Haglers's resume and then look at GGG's and get back to me.:deal: The MW division when Hagler was there was 100000 light years beyond what it looks like today, which is pure trash.

Clearly you are the one with the agenda. Rather than attacking the poster, why not engage in debate why not moving up in 64 fights means you dare to be great, yet not moving up (YET) in 35 means you don't dare be great.

If you want to have that debate, stick around. If not, tick options 3 or 4 on the poll on the way out and go and hate on some none whiteyes on another thread.

Not straight up. He should've done a Ward and fought that generations Paul Smith in a catchweight in his hometown.

To be frank, there is truth to this. The names on Hagler's resume are just not exceptional in the slightest.
    There's:
    1 x A - grader
    a bunch of B+ to B graders
The elite but not ATG 160lb version of Tommy Hearns.
SRL and Hagler were past prime, SRL so far removed from his prime weight class.

If Golovkin can stay at least 'near prime' and continue winning until 38 years old, he is going to have an unbelievable resume:
Canelo, Derevyanchenko, Jacobs, Lemieux, Murray, Geale and the new young MW crop look very, very good.

And look at GGG's resume after 34 fights and look at Hagler's who had already been beaten twice. GGG's was superior

Maybe if GGG sticks around at Middleweight for another 33 fights, his resume will blow Hagler's out of the water.

But Gennady is not allowed to stay in one weight class because he's Eastern European right?

Interesting. But who at, say 164, should he have fought that he didn't fight at 160?
