Did Marvin Hagler dare to be great?

True, fighters can stay in one weight to be great, it is more got to do with level of opposition. Also the willingness to secure legacy defining fights.

With so many belts in a division, and conflicts between networks or promoters, or fighters straight up avoiding one belt holder for an easier opponent, has greatly ruined what it meant to be a multiple weight Champ.

Unification and defending titles, IMO, are where it's at. I always hated when a fighter won a belt and didn't bother defending it. A champion (As opposed to a belt holder) should defend his title, and act like a champion. I've always been of the mind that, fighters make a belt worthy. A belt doesn't make a fighter worthy.

 

Exactly how would beating Glass Jawed Badou Jack make a statement? Jack is awful.

 

What someone made 3 years ago has no bearing on what happens in 2017. I don't know why you keep posting this nonsense. Furthermore, Canelo just sold 250k PPV's and lost his promotional company a boatload of money. I can guarantee you K2 isn't losing money on GGG's fights. A 'cash cow' doesn't sell 250k PPV's or lose money on fights for his promoter.

 

Even the Lemmy - 3G PPV, with "only" 150K buys, made everyone money. Very simple mined posters think the total # of PPV buys is the be all, end all, or a PPV success. Hell, a couple of Floyd's last PPV's sold way under the amount needed to make money, and ended up losing money.

Fighter A making X amount of money against fighter B and C three or four years ago is irrelevant. It literally means nothing but you can't understand that.

The POINT is that every fighter who ever wanted to prove their WORTH has either taken the SMALLER PURSE or have compromised WEIGHT.

 

'Catch weight' fights are a disgrace and don't prove anything. Participating in one of those is not something to brag about. They cheapen the sport for one and are embarrassing. There are 18 damn divisions pick one and fight at the limit.

Several ATGs have fought at catchweights.

Its more embarrassing to be a 7 year champion and not have one marquee win than to meet someone at a catchweight within a weight division.

 

So Holmes, Echols and Eastman were better than Hart, Monroe, Seales, Briscoe, Watts, Hearns, Antuofermo, Minter amongst others? Stick to the supermiddles because you obviously know nothing of the middleweights.

 

He stayed at middle, no problem with that. But he's overrated because he didn't beat any great middleweights.

 

You are correct. Marvin Hagler did not dare to be great, he was very fortunate to have fought in an era and a weight class where other ATGs would move up to DARE to be great.

 

It wasn't a great middle division when Hagler was around. And Hagler chased welterweights too, those are the best fighters he fought, a lightweight too.
