If GGG can, at his natural weight 160.
Why couldn't Marciano, 25 pounds bigger and more powerful?

Watch the end too. He says he sparred Povetkin, and GGG hits harder.

    Far too generic a statement.

Marciano proved he can be beat a SHW when he beat Shkor.

Shkor was a former cringer contender who was never gonna see a world ranking again.

It would be a bit like beating say Tony Thompson.

So we know Rocky can beat people that big, it's about out of those that big who can he beat. Bear in mind he'd have to put on atleast a stone to compete at HW.

The Douglas that beat Tyson? No, but the Douglas that Holy beat, certainly.

Riddick Bowe he has a good chance against because Bowe likes to fight on the inside and that favours the short armed fighter.

    Lewis beats him, almost certainly.

Briggs probably starts off well but if Rock can whether the early storm he should win in the late rounds.

Vitali has great control of range but the way he couldn't keep Byrd outside the pocket hints at a stylistic weakness to determined in fighters. But it would take a lot for Rocky to get inside.

Wlad beats him with ease, his style is all wrong for anyone that short.l

Fury is too unproven, the only CW he ever faced sat him on his arse so I'd go Rocky.

The SHW fighters earlier than Rocky he has a better chance against as referees broke the action more and encouraged fighting on the inside.

The truth is, if any SHW fighter dedicated their life to the jab and grab as Wlad did, Rocky will never beat them because he's physically outmatched. If they aren't adept in that area, he has a chance that grows depending on who he's facing and when.

    Good post

yeah, but this guy is basically saying he found GGG a tougher opponent and a harder hitter than Povetkin.
Whether or not he's right, he genuinely feels that way.
Imagine Rocky? With the extra weight, and not fat, but his frame and his bones. And the bigger shoulder snap with the wilder punches and the non stop pace. Phoo

A great little man will beat a good big man. But he won't beat a great big man unless he has some inherent stylistic advantage or enough athleticism to overcome the difference.

A lot of the great HW fighters are every bit as good a fighter as Rocky was, they just weigh more which is why he's out of his depth in h2h discussion.

That doesn't mean he wouldn't compete in the era of become a top ranked contender. We don't know how good a lot of fighters are today so it's hard predicting how successful he'd be.

Yes, but not all of them.

I think Wlad's jab and grab might tire Marciano, but Wlad isn't knocking him out and Wlad's chin is certainly fragile enough to be cracked with a single punch. Pick'em fight for me.

Vitali would be much better suited with his chin and power.

Lennox would aim to repeat his David Tua performance. But one punch can end Lennox, proven twice, but motivated and fully prepared I'd bet on Lewis.

One thing about Marciano - he was always prepared to slug for 12 rounds. If his goliathesque opponent decided not to train, that would decide the fight.

Was Shkor a SHW? He was tall 6'4.5" but weighed 220.5lbs for Marciano and,in his previous fight against Walcott,[ in which he lasted 1.34 min,] he weighed216lbs.Shkor had won just 3 of his last 11 fights using him as a yardstick to pit Marciano against world class SHW's is flawed reasoning imo . A year before facing Marciano , 29 years old Shkor scaled 212lbs losing a decision to 183lbs Bernie Reynolds. It's a stretch to call him a SHW imo. I don't see Marciano stopping Briggs ,if Vitali who landed flush shots all night on an old Briggs couldn't do it Rocky wouldn't,imo. Some good points in the rest of your post.

If he ate a bit more he'd easily be 230 so yeah I'd call him a SHW.

It's only flawed depending on how you use the result.

IMO he proved beyond doubt he is capable of defeating a big man. It then becomes a question of how good of a big man he can beat.

That will never be answered unfortunately.

Honestly, it depends on the calibre of the heavyweight.

I think Marciano would beat your generic tubbaguts 240 lb HW without too many hassles.

But size alone only gets you so far. I'm going to bring up MMA again, because of a relevant example. A guy called Igor Vovchanchyn (220-230lb, 5'10'') who was built like a refrigerator had a series of epic bouts against some seriously big dudes. We're talking a series of 300-350 lb guys, IN THE SAME NIGHT and he obliterated them. Near the end of his career he fought similar-sized guys to him with world class skills, and had considerably more trouble (eg Cro Cop).

Thus, to return to Marciano, I also believe that once the skill level starts increasing, and we're talking about the chiselled specimens with outstanding skills and who know how to use their size - his chances go down considerably. I used to favour him against Wlad, but I'm starting to think that he'd actually have great difficulty in beating a HW with a great jab who isn't averse to leaning on him for large portions of the bout.

I reckon that Marciano could still get the win in some of these fights, because some of the great heavies blew hot and cold and had fights where they sucked. I still believe that if you swapped him for Levi Billups in his fight vs Lennox Lewis, he would have ripped Lewis a new *******. But all things being equal, you simply have to favour the great 240lb guys over him, and any other small-sized HW.

    IMHO, of course.

I feel like Wlad would be one of the toughest matchups ever for Rocky.

Not because of his size. Because it's Wlad.
A guy who is conditioned, focused, hits hard as hell, has the heart of a champion, has good ring sense, good jab and is strong. He also happens to have another good asset, his size. But that's not what makes him great.

Of course he could. Undeniable. It's not the size of the hwt it's the size of the fight and skill of the hwt.

    This 240lb thing again...

240lb was always a bad weight for heavyweights in Rockys day. It was very very rare a fighter could be functional at that kind of weight as a boxer. The specialised training and diets, the rule changes, equipment required just had not been invented until much much later.

So 240lb heavyweights were dead meat for all 190lb fighters (not just Rocky) back then because so much was against a guy that heavy.

Now it is the other way around. So much is unfairly against the 190 guy now. All the advantages a 190 guy had over big guys has been eradicated by the rule changes and advances in training that allows a potential from bigger men that was impossible before.

Very short answer is you put a 240 SHW in the 1950s and he achieves the 240lb the way 240 was achieved in those days and I doubt any get past Bob Satterfeild never mind Rocky.
