I don't see what the controversy is, it was a competitive fight and a good amount of people thought Kovalev won. Personally, I thought Ward beat him by a couple points but some of those rounds were quite close and could've gone either way. The fact that Kovalev was the champion who also scored a clean knockdown early on, and I can see why people thought he might've won. I read up on his interview, I don't think it has anything to do with jealousy or envy since Ward is still pretty much an unknown commodity domestically. Mayweather was very complimentary about Roman Gonzalez and said he rates him as the # 1 P4P fighter. He didn't sound bitter at all, just voiced his opinion about Ward not being the best pound for pound fighter.
I agree that Ward does not threaten Floyd's legacy, however Floyd really doesn't like the spotlight moving on to someone else even though he's retired.
Honestly, if you've followed Floyd's personality, you'll see that he always tries to keep the attention of the boxing world on himself. It was good career management while he was active, and he's still doing it (out of habit?) even though he's retired now.
Forgive! I read "reverse the decision" and went for broke! The last few weeks with all the Ward/kovalev banter has gotten me a bit on edge! I re-read your post and I see what you are talking about. Personally I don't think FM would care as much if Ward had lost. In his mind he would look at it as another good fighter that has fallen short of his own accomplishments.
No problemo. I wanna apologize myself for my harsh words. IMO if Andre would've lost by close decision I'm pretty confident that Floyd would've said " Aha ! Told u so they gonna do you" ...regardless if Floyd thought that Kovalev was deserving winner or not. Floyd lives in a world where he's the center of the universe, so he cant be wrong, he hates that !! How can u say Virgil Hunter is a bad coach ? Just because he didnt lace'em up? Why didnt he say that after Ward won the Super 6 ?? Virgil Hunter is a world class boxing coach and motivator. He s definetly one of the best 3 coaches in the world IMO
Yeah but in the modern age the record doesn't carry as much weight as it used to because fights are available to see, and in the court of public opinion Kovalev won. Just like Holyfield officially drew with Lewis. nobody agrees with that either. If this was a newspaper decision it would be a clear cut victory for Kovalev in the record books.
Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather, both say Ward lost.... that has to be soul crushing to a particular TMT sect of Ward supporters. Absolutely soul crushing lol.
True And its funny that...ahem...certain posters are nowhere to be seen on this thread. They stay the F away from it. Its heresy for them lol
Hunter is a very good coach! Although FM has a vast amount more experience in the world of boxing than myself, I can't see how he can say negative things about Hunter as a coach.
