    Ostensibly the biggest deal in Mexican boxing since Barrera vs. Morales III (with apologies, foremost, to the Vázquez vs. Márquez trilogy, among many other eminently worthier intranational "vato a vato" prize ring classics...this is strictly in terms of box office and star-driven hype/pizazz) finally set for "Post- Cinco de Mayo Hangover Day". This will headline an HBO PPV in Las Vegas, scheduled for the championship haul despite nothing being at stake (but for machismo & pride...and, I guess, future PPV bargaining power as the apex predator of A-sides) with a catchweight of 164½ lbs.

    Who rallies the country under the bandera de México triumphantly and who is consecrated to "also-ran of their generation" status?

    I think this may be a cherry pick go wrong for Canelo, sure Chavez was RTD'd against Fonfara, but that had something to do with Fonfara being a 6 Foot 3 Light Heavyweight who could be a Cruiserweight and him being a Middleweight with an eating disorder.

    Ironically Canelo could very well be making the same mistake in facing Chavez Jr. that Chavez Jr. made in facing Fonfara.

    Chavez will have a massive size and in all probability a weight advantage, and could end up walking Canelo down and doing a Cotto-Margarito on him.

    I'm confused tho....if you're saying Chávez is basically a natural middle, and the big knock on Canelo has always been that he picks on small/old men am (having always been considered a natural middle boiled down himself for most of his career), how is there a significant natural size advantage in play?

    At catchweight and in Vegas I heavily favor Canelo, I still remember those disgusting scorecards for his fights against FMJ and Cotto.

    Canelo by wide decision. If there's a rehydration clause, I can even see him forcing a corner stoppage.

    Chavez was a big weight cutting Middle that should have been facing Super Middleweights (but was hesitant), and made the mistake of leaping 2 divisions instead of one to pick on someone misperceived (by him) as a somewhat easy win, Canelo is a big weight cutting Light Middle that should be facing Middleweights (but is hesitant) and could be making the mistake of ostensibly jumping 2 divisions instead of one to pick on someone possibly misperceived as a somewhat easy win as well.

    The catchweight isn't between SMW and cruiser. It's almost smack dab between MW and SMW.

    Oh wait, you were using cw as an abbreviation for catchweight (not cruiserweight)? Never mind.

    And yes, it does. CRUISERWEIGHT (which is what that abbreviation is understood to mean 99% of the time in a boxing context) would have favored Chávez.

    I figured you misread the contracted weight as 185.5 instead of 165.5 and were calling it functionally cruiserweight (being, in your mind, or so I thought, a catchweight between the light heavy and cruiser limits)

    Edit my post, yes I meant catchweight, I look for Canelo to have a good camp without emphasis on starving himself for a change :pancarta:

    Meanwhile it will be a typical Chávez Jr. camp of smoking weed and headbutting ceiling fans to, um, build up cranial scar tissue for cushioning and bolster his punch resistance.

    I think we're going to get a very controversial ending in this one, whoever takes it.
    Jr is a lesser boxer, but also the bigger guy. I guess Alvarez will enter the ring at about 177-180, while Chavez Jr might actually hit the 190 mark, countering skill with sheer mass.

    I'm on the fence at the moment.

    Put it this way: is a non-drained Canelo a more formidable h2h fighter than not-that-much-bigger Sebastian Zbik (who gave a more prime & motivated JCC Jr. hell and was robbed in the eyes of many)? My feeling is yes.

    Chavez is going to look like a zombie chimichanga on that night. I bet he doesn't even make weight...
    is there a penalty if he doesn't make 164.5?
