Before I discovered message boards, I never knew a fighter who beat another fighter convincingly had to give him a rematch and beat him yet again for it to count.
It's not revisionist history at all. Foreman called Ali out publicly on TV numerous times. After Zaire, George didn't feel like going back to fighting the Lyles and LeDouxs of the world: he wanted Ali. When it became apparent that Ali wouldn't fight him, George got back in the ring and started wrecking people. He never should have had to fight Young in the first place. He had already been number one contender for more than a year at that point. Ali ducked him big-time. Accept it.
Sometimes its just due to circumstances and things just don't go to plan. Hagler rematch with Hearns was definitely planned after Hagler / Muagbi and Hearns / Shuler doubleheader , then Leonard stepped and you know what happened next.
From March 8th 1971 until Jan 22nd 1973 Frazier defended his title twice ,against 2 unranked journeymen.During that time ,nearly 2 years, Ali was the number one contender .Quack ,Quack, Quack!
Very true,McVey. Ali resumed that spot as soon as he beat Jimmy Ellis in his first fight back post FOTC.
Good post,Herol. Ali should have retired the monent he realised he's slipped as much as he did after 1976. Like a lot of people,I feel he ought to have packed it in after Frazier III.
As you say, the window where you can accuse Ali of ducking Foreman is from the Norton rubber to the Foreman losing to Young. That's not quite six months and Ali didn't take on other challenger during that time (I can't say if the Evangelista fight already was scheduled when Foreman lost you Young, though - it quite probably was). That's hardly the worst duck on record. Ali's reign was a bit iffy after Norton III, though. He clearly didn't want any more tough fights and should have just retired.
My own view is that Foreman would never have been as tough for Ali as Norton and Frazier were in spite of George blitzing them both within two rounds each. A style thing,as they say.
What exactly had he done to merit a rematch in the period from 30th October 1974 when he was kod by Ali, until 24th of Jan 1976 when Ron Lyle ,[whom Ali had stopped in May1975,] had him up and down like a yo yo?
