Yes Joe did destroy buddy baer and a few other shw but cmon lennox and most modern day heavy weight are a cut above those men. Boxing as evolved since the 40s. Simple question.. Would Joe be able to step in the ring today and facing today's heavy s and make 2 5 defence s?. I'm not asking if he could beat 1940 s men but today s?
Louis is certainly better than Ray Mercer.Lennox had perhaps a little bit of an off noght there but is shows you how much trouble he would have with Louis.
Exactly. What's with all the kiddies running around Classic lately? They're writing off a p4p puncher and a guy that many people have as the #1 HW as a lost cause against not only Lewis but "modern fighters" as well This is despite said ATG having knocked out heavier guys than Lewis, and Lewis having had trouble with fighters the exact size as Joe (faded Holyfield). Even if we heavily favour Lennox, it's recorded history that he was one-shotted by heavy handed HW's, (McCall being the same height as Joe btw) and Louis is nothing if not heavy handed and accurate. For the record I too favour Lewis - but not by much. It would be a close affair and I wouldn't be surprised if Louis won. But the level of drivel barfed forth thus far by certain posters rivals that of the cloaca maxima
Yes Lewis was knocked out by mccall and rahman as can happen to any fighter, any time. But by saying rahman can do it so Joe Louis certainly can, turn it around and say if Joe can be dropped by Braddock, galento Jersey Joe and knocked out by schmeling then Lewis definitely can't knock him out!!!. Where s the logic in that?!. That lennox can be knocked out by lesser fighters but Joe Louis would win because he s been knocked out by a lesser fighter to!!
I actually see the fight as been a tough one for lennox. He would be hurt in it no doubt but just feel that odds are stacked against Joe in this.
Due probably to the war the heavyweight division was not exceptional during the 40's, but I wouldn't say boxing has"evolved" since then. That decade gave us: Armstrong Burley Zale Moore Charles Williams Ike Bivins Bratton Graham Cerdan Ortiz Pep Booker Chase Williams Holman Robinson Etc.Are there better fighters around today?
So that claim is boxers are generally getting worse and modern day fighters would always lose to the guys from years gone by. While a lot of those guys u mentioned probably beat a fair few nowadays there are some that would be defeted by modern day men. For example Jack johnson ahead of his time back then, but now would look primitive.
I don't claim anything, I just question your statement that "boxing has evolved since the 40's". Jack Johnson is not relevant to this discussion he died in1946.
But that's part and parcel of the discussion about modern v old timers. Saying have boxers got better, have they evolved so to speak. U your self mentioned boxers long dead. I'm not naive enough to say every modern day guy beats great s from the past but surely boxers must have moved on and evolved. Most other sports have
For example I don't see Billy conn hurting lennox or James Braddock knocking him to the floor. But it is possible rahman could know out Joe Louis. Just my opinion
Are todays champions in their respective divisions better than; Heavyweight Louis Light Heavy Conn/Moore Middle Robinson/Zale/Cerdan/Apostoli Welter Armstrong/Robinson Light Williams/Montgomery Feather Pep/Saddler Only in the smallest divisions is the competition greater imo due to the Asian& Mexican input. Lets not forget that contenders for the heavier divisions incuded. Charles Marshall Booker Chase Bivins Chase Williams Burley Bratton Cocoa Kid and a hundred or so more,[ I must cut this short as I need to shave and shower, going to my Sunday lunchtime Jazz]. So a simple question that requires a simple answer.
In answer to that that.,i would say the odds are most modern fighters would defeat those from sixty years ago. And note I say most, not all. But as for the heavy weight division which has obviously changed in size and weight I would put guys from sixty years ago at a big disadvantage. Definitely not so much tht lower weights but heavy weight division definitely
I've followed your posts for a while now and I do respect your boxing knowledge but this is just something I believe when it comes to the heavy weight s. At the end of the day that s all we're doing, expressing a opinion.
