I just love it how everyone tries their hardest to hype SMW in the vain attempt to slag on the MW division, but the reality is, SMW is in horrid shape, and tonight's DeGale/Jack match as good and entertaining as it may have been, didn't do anything to change that. It truly highlighted the level they're all operating on, and that is NOT on the level of Carl Froch, not even close, quite frankly The Cobra should have hung around a few more years, he'd be the crowned king of the division at this point. Let's put this into a little perspective here shall we....

George Groves was riding high on his series of wins and undefeated streak came into his match against Carl with a head full of steam... brimming with confidence, and managed to drop him hard in the first round, shocking the world, and then what happened, Carl came back like he usually does, gritted his teeth, recalibrated his chin setting, and proceeded to walk through everything George threw at him until he started gassing and then he smushed Saint George like a ugly little bald bug, yeah I know, the match was stopped too soon, bull****, had it continued it would have only prolonged the inevitable, a Groves stoppage loss, perhaps only more brutal. Carl took care of him with ease in the rematch shattering his glass jaw into smithereens, he went down like he'd been shot in the head with a double barrel shotgun.

DeGale and Groves are evenly matched, before Groves lost his confidence, they had a back and forth match that could have easily been a draw, or a Groves win or a DeGale win, its debatable, ultimately Groves got the nod. But what's not debatable is that they were and still are on the same level and clearly Chunky's struggles against Medina and Jack highlights his still existent and glaring flaws. Groves blew Murray and Gutknecht (sadly injuring him in the process) out of the ring recently, both of those guys, while good are on Porky Medina's level, there is no excuse for DeGale's shoddy performance against him when he pretending to be a P4P player.

Groves-Jack was a very competitive match as well, another back and forth affair, it could have gone either way, at best Jack won by a round, the closeness of some of the rounds could have edged it towards Groves on some scorecards, it could easily have been a draw with Jack nicking the win due to the benefit of the KD, regardless no one can point to that as a dominant and impressive performance by Jack and brag on him, it was just okay. If Jack was anything all that special then why didn't he destroy Groves with absolute ease? Why couldn't he Cobra his ass? Because he isn't special, that's why, he's a decent workman like but ultimately underwhelming fighter.

Same goes for Badou's match against DeGale, they were tit for tat throughout the last 9 rounds, Jack did impressive work to the body, landed hard clean straight shots up top, but DeGale did equally impressive work up top with his hard looping overhands clipping Jack around his guard, both basically negating the other, regardless they're both around the same level, neither man proved they're superior to the other, they're basically on equal footing, even right down to exchanging one knockdown a piece, Jack's a flash KD and DeGale's possibly due to sheer exhaustion.

So there you have it in a nutshell, SMW is basically 3 pretty average guys with questionable stamina, crappy chins and overrated power who are in and around the same level who can't decisively beat the other.

But here's the catch, they can't beat Bute decisively either, an old washed up shot to hell Bute that had been totally robbed of his confidence by the animalistic savage thrashing he received at the hands of the Cobra, and the one sided schooling by Pascal.

DeGale and Jack struggled mightily against this old warrior, DeGale at best beat Bute 8-4 at worst it should have been a draw, he was tagged with regularity, which seems to be a pattern lately with James, and his punches had little to no effect on Lucian, sure its a win, but when you barely scrape by an old worn out wartorn has been in what was supposed to be a highlight reel KO showcase match when you're supposed to be one of the kings of the division, what the hell does that say about the division?

Same goes for Jack, that wasn't nearly as dominant a performance as TMT fanboys try to make it out to be, a draw is an arguable reality, at best Jack won 8-4 or 7-5, and that's nothing to write home about, and that was against a tenderized by Chunky version of Bute. Jack was wilting towards the end, his stamina was failing him and the old fart was walking him down, had it been a 15 rounder, Bute would have probably reverse Librado'd him.

The two Grand Poobah's of the division have both went life and death with The Cobra's sloppy seconds twice, and these are sloppy seconds that he not only beat, but freaking annihilated, I mean the term Bute'd is a thing, these two Lions couldn't accomplish the simple act of Buteing Bute.... that pretty much says it all.

Here's the reality Groves, DeGale, Old Bute and Jack are all on the same level.

And I'll add in a few other little tidbits DeGale had a hard time with Piotr Wilczewski, Curtis Stevens KO'd him in 3. Jack got KTFO by Derek Edwards who got stopped by Korobov, and Medina gave Chunky hell, yet Uzcategui dominated him, and Korobov beat Uzcategui with ease.

And of course GGG stopped Murray and George couldn't

The division is in terrible shape, Froch, Ward, Kessler and Calzaghe steamroll this lot into a pile of groady mincemeat. DeGale and Jack would look like victims of Leatherface when The Cobra got done devouring their souls, in fact I still think he could.

Yes the Cobra would walk through them all, just like he did to Dirrell.

    Well said CST

The Cobra will be missed for a long long time. Very few men have his mandibular and testicular fortitude

R6 of Groves Froch 1 would have ruined 99% of boxers on Carl's receiving end

    But not the Cobra

He wouldnt have beaten Calzaghe, but he was as tough as they come and took on the best time and time again

    A real throwback

He doesnt need to, and being a small MW shouldnt, but if he chose to, Golovkin would wreck the 168 division

Froch would catch up and finish all of them. None of them would reach champion rounds

Groves is on equal footing look what happened to him. Got demolished.

Was also thinking none of them would take a round off calzaghe or Kessler.

Yeah I agree Froch would have eaten them all alive. Destroys every single active SMW out there unless Andre Dirrell was to roll back the years and school him again.

Well said, 168 is far weaker than when Ward, Froch, prime Groves, prime Bute, Kessler, etc. were ruling the division.

    Thanks Beouche.

And as far as GGG is concerned I was thinking the same thing last night. They're middling fighters who are riddled with flaws which GGG could exploit with ease, Jack and DeGale are going to be emulsified at LHW when they finally move up.

I dunno...I think the top 10 of last year's division is probably a bit deeper, top to bottom the division that Calzaghe and Kessler ruled. Froch's name obviously stands out, but I don't think Jack or DeGale would be at all out of place in the top 5 of that division. If you were to make some matches between similarly ranked fighters, I think that many of them would be competitive. So, on the whole, I'd hardly classify the current division as being a wasteland or in a ghoulish state.

Great article bro. It's unbelievable how it suddenly went from one of the best divisions in boxing to one of the weakest. Calzaghe, Froch, Kessler, Ward would have beaten all the current guys with ease.

    Sore loser, sore grapes!

The MW division hasn't had a match as exciting, competitive and entertaining as Jack-Degale since Pavlek-Taylor.

Considering your score of the fight, YDKSAB! It's hard to take anything you write seriously. Almost everything you write has underlying tones of fanboyism.

So what are you saying, competitive and entertaining matches equals quality fighters? Then I guess you'd consider Tapales and Sor Singyu ATG's then right?

There's nothing you can dispute here, sure you can write it off as a triangle theory, but in this particular case, there is no disputing those three guys are in and around the same level as an old shot Bute, there's ample evidence.

Be a fanboy all you want, it still doesn't change the fact that they're average in every way, and not even close to the level of Froch, Ward, Kessler and Calzaghe.

Yeah its totally out of line....

    Round 1 DeGale 10-8
    Round 2 DeGale 10-9
    Round 3 DeGale 10-9
Round 4 DeGale 10-9 Very Close
    Round 5 DeGale 10-9
    Round 6 Jack 10-9
    Round 7 DeGale 10-9
    Round 8 Jack 10-9
    Round 9 DeGale 10-9
Round 10 DeGale 10-9 Very Close
Round 11 Jack 10-9 Very Close
    Round 12 Jack 10-8

    DeGale 115-111

Other than the fact that all 3 judges gave the 10th to DeGale like I did, 1 gave him the 4th like I did, flip my two very close DeGale rounds its a draw, but flip my Very Close Jack round its a DeGale win again. I said very close for a reason, some rounds are very close and open to interpretation, which is why I state that they're very close, I have no qualms with anyone scoring those rounds either way, that being said like with Kovalev-Ward, to flat out say that Jack definitely won is a stretch.
