Who takes it. The young power punching but raw Benn who cracked Iran to the canvas three times or the veteran who put on one of the best nights of his life to knock down and out point barkley?
Well, considering that Duran's fight with Barkley was razor Close, I'd have to go with Benn who clearly was better than Barkley. Benn wasn't really polished either but he got off quicker than Barkley and had much faster handspeed. He might gass, though. So a Duran win is definitely a live option.
It's not inconceivable that despite Duran's greatness Benn could blow him away early on, Benn for all his flaws was a beast then. If he didn't however, Duran's greater skill set and savvy I think would be enough to see him through to a hard fought points win, or even a late stoppage against a gassed Benn.
Benn was a bigger puncher than Barkely. Barkley was a strong man with a decent punch but not an explosive power puncher. I might be wrong but as far as I remember Benn was a significantly bigger puncher than anyone Duran beat or survived the distance with.
I suspect you'll actually find yourself in the minority with the statement "Benn was clearly better than Barkley". I can't see an awful lot of basis for it. Definitely a better puncher though, punch-for-punch, in my opinion.
Well, there are a lot of Duran fans here. But blasting out someone in the first round is usually a pretty clear statement about who the better fighter is. Benn was much faster and got off much more quickly. Barkley had better chin and probably also better stamina, though. And as I said, Benn's lack of stamina might be a factor here.
Duran is one of those fighters who old timers build up and act like he couldn't lose even though he did. Hearns put him to bed in 2 rounds. Benn destroyed Iran in 1 round. Duran got a split decision win. Clearly Benn is a much bigger puncher than Duran. Clearly Benn had the power to KO Roberto. Unless Benn just gassed out completely he would stop Duran in less than 6.
