You must be watching those Hanzagod defense videos on youtube like me. You know he's got like thirty of them? They're really good. And a lot of them aren't guys you would even think of when it comes to defense. You're watching them like "Really, this guy?" Until you run into a couple defense highlight reels by fighters that you know just blocked punches with their face and it's like "Oh, I guess you can put together an impressive highlight reel of anyone if you just have enough footage." Still worth watching, 'cause that guy makes some of the best boxing vids on the internet, but you got to be skeptical with him sometimes and wonder if what you are seeing is just the result of good editing. He's got this defense highlight of Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson where he's moving around like he's in the matrix, dodging punches looking like Pernell Whitaker. I was like, I've seen two or three of his fights and he wasn't moving like this in those. This must be a rare occasion like he could only do this against a severely limited opponent. Starling .Kalambay.Whitaker .Graham.defense is something that the man in the street doesn't appreciate.
Julio Cesar Chavez deserves a mention. His head and upper body movement were second to none. Very difficult to catch with a clean shot and he was always coming forward, too.
Locche by far. No fighter in history had the inside knowledge on when and where the punches were coming from and how to deal with them like Locche. All the great defensive fights mentioned here all took way more shots than Locche ever did. For possibly the best defensive display ever in a single rd check out the 15th rd of the 1st Cervantes fight. The dark horse ln the race may have been Australia's Young Griffo but we can only go by what his opponents and the old timers tell us because no footage exists of him.
Well, it goes to show that even fighters who would be considered defensively flawed within the context of the sport have to have developed some level of ability to avoid punches to even reach the level of contender/champion, even in today's era with multiple sanctioning bodies. But yeah, you wouldn't necessarily associate guys like Hurricane Carter with the term "great defense". Anyway, while I wasn't familiar with this particular posters work (which is pretty damned impressive) I do remember watching Qawi use head movement to avoid up to five or six punches in a row when he was at his best. Ditto Pedroza and Mamby, who both received significant TV exposure in the 80's. Sometimes defensive skill is best appreciated by watching it occur during the course of a fight.
You must take into account he never took a backward step and was frequently fighting fighters a lot bigger and heavier than him. Put floyd in with someone 6" taller than him with a couple of stone weight advantage and see how he gets on
