Too much ducking in boxing has killed my love for the sport

Been following for several years intensively. Here's what I see.
80 percent mismatches. Good and dangerous opponents get ducked to oblivion. We get treated to at most a dozen good fights per year.
Some recent examples
Canelo straight ducking GGG
Ward retiring instead of rematch with Krusher
Spence being effectively ignored like a ghost
Wilder cherry pick after cherry
Khurtsidze gets passed up by Canelo shamelessly in WBO rankings

When this crop of top fighters is out I'll be done as well. Too much talent being wasted by either fighting cherries or shelved fighting 1 or 2 times a year

 

Ward hasn't retired

 

IRT Spence being ignored.
First. He made clear that he didnt necessarily NEED to go right after Brook after beating Bundu.
Second. Why is it that Brook was immediately forced to fight Dan, then when Lawson emerged as a potential monster, he was given an eliminator in which Brook was again, immediately forced to fight Biz.

How many mandatories does he have to fight before he gets a voluntary or a unification????

 

To be honest "ducking" or "avoiding" has gone on forever. Back in the good old days when there was one world title fighters used to be frozen out completely.

I'm not saying that excuses ducking/avoiding today but it's always been there.

It is frustrating and annoying but there is a little difference now because there are social media platforms and fans do have a little power to pressure fighters, promoters and TV networks and they can have their say and say it directly to people involved in boxing.

For me, its been the whole catch weight thing. Ducking or avoiding someone because of weight it pretty dumb.

 

Don't forget Rigondeaux being openly dissed by his own promoter for winning against the house favorites.
Haymon has the power to make any match happen even outside his stable it seems. Hopefully 2017 is the clean-up year. GBP will not sacrifice Canelo but here are some rumors.

Boxing has lost its appeal to the casual fan because they view it as being on a parr with pro wrestling
Ducking, cherry picking, unfair fights & even blatant CHEATING are part & parcel of its demise
They said boxing was corrupt back in the 50's when the Mob & Mafia ran it. They still run it today but they use the name STATE COMMISSIONERS now. They don't have to try & hide it now
Ive been in and around the sport too long to abandon it It just breaks my heart to see some innocent hard working fighter get his career destroyed while others are allowed to male their own rules & cheat with impunity

 

Lack of fan compliance to the way things are and have been for decades kills my love for talking boxing. Constant...Just constant bitching all the time, and for what purpose, it helps to change nothing about the sport.

 

I think this year will be better mate, last year was terrible admittedly, but this year 50-50 fights are getting made.

Canelo-GGG is a good chance for this year
Ward may take the rematch eventually, if not Beterbiev, Barerra and Gvozdyk will give us big fights.
Spence will get his title fight this year I'm sure
Wilder will have to fight someone better for sure
Khurtsidze's mandatory has just been enforced

Agreed.

But he does have a point though, boxing does suffer from ducking in comparison to other sports, where the best do play the best. IMHO boxing could be bigger if the right fights were made, and that would actually bring more money in the longterm.

I think a structural change is needed to overcome this, just imagine where tennis would be if Federer and Nadal never played each other.

 

Most sports are in leagues - so there are fixtures which teams are obliged to fulfill - or have one governing body like athletics, and even then top sprinters avoid each other until the big races. Imagine if there were four Olympic Games. Ducking is a product of having so many bodies offering world titles (by definition you therefore don't have to fight the best to get a belt), which of course, is also motivated by business rather than sporting reasons. It's the nature of our sport, which actually rewards 'ducking', especially when a boxer's value and reputation often suffers after a loss. Many fans criticise 'ducking' but then write off fighters when they lose. we can't have it both ways, I feel...

 

Cotto has losses but I'd be thrilled to see him fight Brook. PAC has 6 losses but I'll watch him fight. Even if Canelo was KOd by GGG I'd still watch
But the casuals can definitely be harsh with losses

Who am I kidding lmao. Double Jab hit the nail on the coffin. Too many separate entities in boxing. If it were centralized I have no doubt boxing would be the biggest sport on earth. But seriously, without a polorizing figure like Mayweather, change is imminent. The fights will come.....
