With hindsight now we can see how special the rock is, he was certainly no great white hope just there for a payday. He of course had tremendous fighting spirit, a very good chin and that punch. But going up against Joe the focus would have been on if Louis could continue his comeback. Only now years on we can see that s how it had to be. One legend had died and another was been born

Prime for prime Marciano may have won.I don't think so. but it would be ridiculous to deny the possibility, imo

The passing of the torch fights are a necessary part of the game. In that sense, it was a huge fight. As an actual victory over a viable, elite heavyweight, it gets way overblown. With Louis' debts, if he had anything remaining in the tank, he would have fought past Marciano. He was technically younger than Walcott and only a couple years older than Moore.

Yea it was neccessary. Marciano was forced into the fight by his backers and Louis while out of prime still had a punchers chance. Style wise Marciano would still win even though he was the lesser talent,he had the style to trouble louis and his trainer had Louis's number bc he trained Godoy who handled louis enough. Marcianos best win may be louis? You can only fight in an era whos there ..it certainly helped his legacy. in m odern times if each could study the other with todays standards ? Louis would k.o Marciano. then ? Well louis was limited and had limited footage /news/ etc....Prime for prime ...though ...Marciano wins ,i dont feel he actually wanted to win bc he didnt want the fight.

The better fighter doesnt always win if you have someone that can exploit a Weakness.

Joe said of the Marciano fight that he saw the openings but his right hand wouldn't go, it reminded me of Larry Holmes saying pretty much the same thing after the first Spinks loss.

The first rd wrote the story for the fight Louis could not keep Marciano away and get the correct punching distance. Louis needed punching room and Marciano bulled him and kept the fight inside. When Louis got his distance just before the 1st rd ended, landed a brutal Left hook -right upper cut combo where he seemed to hurt Marciano, but Marciano came right back and landed a right swing which shook Louis.

He didnt have ,"a punchers chance" because he was no longer a puncher! How many fights did Godoy win against Louis?

And why couldn't he keep him away? Because he no longer had his right hand power.

That one right hand Louis threw at the end of the 1st rd had some pop on it. Maybe you missed that. Slow it down and you'll see the effect. Louis had problems from the get go. He couldnt maintain the distance he needed to get his shots off. He was being bulled around, by the smaller man. He threw plenty of right hands inside mostly uppercuts. That combo he landed was pretty good and Marciano paid him back staggering Louis. This was an old tired Louis, whose reflexes and snap were gone. That combo showed he still had some pop but he couldnt get his shots off due to his refexes and Marciano's in your face tactic's. As Louis said he saw the openings but couldnt get his shots off.

Louis was shot, he was essentially a one -handed fighter by then.

Do you think those that went the distance would have done so with a prime Louis?
