And that fight was at 150 when he was coming down from 154 pounds. By that time he was a JMW. When Margarito was at Welterweight he did not cut much weight.
I didn't say that he has no boxing skills, but he does rely on his physicality, I don't think that can be argued. In a similar vain to both Margarito and Froch.
But he was clearly the larger man in there on most occasions. The size advantage that he had was one his primary attributes even at his best.
15 pounds is a lot to cut and fighters tend to struggle to be cut weight more as they got older. I have a hard time believing he was only cutting a few pounds as a young man when making 147 but was then dropping 15 later on.
Physicality is a part of boxing. For ****s sake man it's a combat sport. What did you expect? Chess???
That's one example. GGG didn't respect Brook's power and wanted to just get him out of there. GGG can box more carefully and I think he's shown more than enough evidence of great skill from the amateurs let alone the watered down pros.
Margo's approach wasn't particular refined, though...Even compared to, say, a Froch or the aforementioned Pavlik. Bear in mind that this thread was created shortly after Margo got wiped by Mosley and got nailed for loading the wraps, so there was bound to be some vitriol directed by Pimp at that point.
He wins his fights through his physicality by attrition, using his aggression, power and chin. Great attributes to have. In terms of actual boxing skills, I wouldn't put him above Kell Brook who outboxed him early but lost due to the previous mentioned factors.
Nice, there's Great skill that marries these physicality factors well, though - this is what a Froch for example fails to do. Golovkin can competently outbox someone, it just wouldn't be a utilisation of all of his resources to do so without fusing physicality. Lemieux is no world beater but that fight, as well as his amateur reign is a good enough indicator of his great skill level.
The acid test for me is if he is able to beat someone who outmatches him physically, where he has to box and overcome these challenges. I don't think there is anyone at 160 who can provide this, I think it's a weak division. I think Badou Jack would be a very interesting fight as for the first time in GGG's career he wouldn't be the stronger guy.
Now we are criticizing fighters for having too sturdy of a chin and a lot of determination. That is actually happening. But if you have a shaky chin or low workrate you get called glass heart or glass chin. You can't win with some people. This place is amazing.
