Forgot to mention Pernell Whitaker.. I heard stories from guys who trained in states that Whitaker used to go to the gym smoke weed in his car then come in and touch everybody up in sparring. Doesn't surprise me at all....
Most boxers have spent formative years surrounded by yes men , people who continually remind them how great they are , people who give boxers the impression they can do no wrong. This can have a detrimental effect on a fighters psyche when the glory days end . '' Life pretty much wasn't the same after boxing '' Calzaghe Or once they have reached the pinnacle of their career and legacy cemented. '' I had it all money, women , fame , cars , yachts everything a man could want but it didn't give my life meaning . I felt nothing so what did i do . The most stupidest thing.'' Julio Cesar Chavez Devon Alexander who is now trying to resume his career after a addiction to pain killers. DA said he became addicted to pk after a nose surgery. PK can be a very nasty cycle managing pain with addiction. I'm not trying to excuse these boxers above behavior just emphasizing the circumstances why they did it.

The funny duality between how marijuana affects you and the mentality you need for boxing or pretty different. I've always been interested by that. Some fighters to come to mind... Gerry Cooney was an alcoholic, though I'm not sure when it started. Peter McNeely was heavy into drugs as well. Mike Hunter had issues with substance abuse I believe.
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-norfolk-26034439 Perhaps he didn't use drugs but sold them, though I'm suspicious. And I read his autobiography when it came out years ago and seem to recall something about Jamaican drug lords in there or some such but I'll have to get back to you on that one...
