I have a pretty lame setup Ive just got a couple oscars and a dempsey in a 120gal. Would really really like to upgrade to a 200plus this summer.

I would never trust a tank in a situation like this. Water expands and contracts as it freezes and then melts. I had this happen with several small 10 gallon tanks I left outside one winter after cleaning out a pet store that was closing down. The bottom dramatically cracked the length of many of them from the glass being unable to take the stress.

I would have more trust in an acrylic tank being outdoors. I actually have a large one on it's side outside right now. It's not an issue doing that with glass either, storing them dry outside with a trap or some such... But you just can't let any water get into the tanks.

Also, as a heads up, the amount of energy to keep a tank at a tropical temperature in freezing weather would be in the thousands of watts. You would be spending a considerable amount of energy on something. Or would you just be trying to keep goldfish in 50/60 degree water throughout the year?

Fiberglass tubs and even more so water storage troughs for livestock feeding are great as outdoor ponds. Super tough, meant to take abuse from 1,000+ pound sudo-tarded animals. Very cheap as well, though your view is obviously limited of your prize fish.

These can stand freezing water as well, meant to be used outdoor all year...

Like you said, heating it in the winter would probably be way too costly... I was hoping that if I insulated the sides enough it wouldnt be too bad but nah... I think youre right.
