Last night I kept hearing itv say 'the eubanks, first father and son world champion's. Besides the cringe of Jr's title being the ibo, I thought 'what about chavez and Jr?' What other father son world champs have there been?
well i think that WBA interim title that eubank jr. won has more prestige than IBO. Also when Eubank SR. was WBO champ that title was not taken seriously outside of UK. Only benn fights solidifies Eubank as real deal to me as he Benn did win real title WBC and beat american fighters!
I believe the WBA interim should be seen as lower as the IBO one, which I guess is on par with WBA Regular. Only WBA (normal, no super in place) and WBA Super are actual major titles. Don't forget about the Mayweathers. Floyd Mayweather's son (Jr) was a decent beltholder too.
Guty Espadas sr and jr Floyd and Tracy Patterson (although not blood related) Leon and Cory Spinks Wilfredo Vazquez sr and jr
In the alphabet era, it is obviously far easier to win a version of the title. Someone like Tony Mundine would have had a good chance of winning a belt at some point, if he had more options than going through Carlos Monzon. Yoel Judah was a kickboxing world champion, and Laila Ali was obviously a women's world champion.
I don't have a problem with the whole 'boxing family thing. There's been a lot of them over the years. The Hilton's, for one, makes for an interesting, if tragic, story. However such families rarely give us more than one true talent. Two or more world champions of any real note from the same family is quite rare. The sons of famous world champions don't tend to do particularly well, in spite of getting every privilege, protection and opportunity. Several have failed to reach the top in recent years; Hearns Jr, Paez Jr, Camacho Jr etc. There are several around at the moment including Mosley Jr and Jackson Jr. Now we have Conner Benn. Many of these guys get more hype than they really deserve, yet none of them have come close to the achievements of their fathers. Chavez Jr has probably been one of the best of the sons, but few would claim that he is particularly skilled or talented. Eubank Jr will be much the same, I'm sure.
Jr isn't a world champ, we all know that. But he beat a decent enough fighter last night. I pitch that fight at world title eliminator level...
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr/Sr Guty Espadas Jr/Sr Wilfredo Vazquez Jr/Sr Floyd Patterson/Tracy Harrison Paterson (father - adopted son) Leon Spinks/Cory Spinks
The IBO is pretty much worthless, how is it on par with any version of the WBA belt? So if there's no super champ and just a regular WBA belt, you think some guy wearing the fake green belt is on par with him? How does that make sense?
Chavez Jr was a paper champ. The corrupt WBC wrongfully stripped that title from Sergio Martinez to make Jr a champ.
