As a fan of the #1 P4P LHW Champion of the WORLD, Andre Ward, I'm all for the rematch as long as Ward gets paid as the soon to be ATG boxer that he is. Otherwise, if the ducats aren't correct and Kovalev fans still demand an immediate rematch, I'm all for them starting a crowd-funding effort to collect a few million bucks to help their former champion out. If they aren't willing to help put together the funds, then they should just suck sour grapes and get used to the bitter and foul taste of defeat.
I couldn't call this one beforehand. Made a post listing paths to victory for each man. Watched it with commentary off, live. Scored it for Kovalev by 2 points. Surprised by decision for Ward, but it was not a robbery; there were four rounds in there that were close/swing rounds and homeboy will typically swing such rounds. Kovalev wasn't robbed. Ward didn't school him or dismantle him either. We, fans, deserve the rematch. Diva Ward should **** or get off the pot.
justifying wards ducking?? ward will not make more than the first fight. he will never make that much again. guess he should just retire now.
I do believe that Kovalev...an even more motivated Kovalev, that is, will make the necessary adjustments and beat Ward next time,...if there is a next time that is.
I'd agree that Abraham was a good win for Ward and one that often gets overlooked. He was a 2 time title holder with 5-6 title defenses at 168. Taylor, Miranda(when he was still somebody), Murray, and Stieglitz a bunch of times is a nice collection of wins. All that after making almost a dozen title defenses at middleweight. His losses were to highly rated fighters at the time and even now he's well past his best he's still seen as a top 10 supermiddleweight(168 isn't the deepest division around in fairness). Clearly the win isn't on par with Kessler, Kovalev, and Froch but it's still a good win for Ward.
But we also have to acknowledge he was totally dominated off Froch, Dirrell and Ward. He was stopped by Stiglitz and went 2-1 with him, he went life and death with the real gone kid, Paul Smith and totally dominated off Ramirez. AA is actually 15-5 (6) at 168. Imo his best years where at 160 but even so his style doesn't bode well for him at 168 prime or not. As you say it's a good name to have but AA at 168 is nothing special.
The bolded is why I think Ward is being miscast here. In my opinion, he's not the hurdle here. It's Roc. I posted this in another thread, but I'll recap here: *They guaranteed him too much, and if the terms to the rematch were already agreed upon, I can guarantee you Andre didn't sign a contract locking him in to a rematch saying he'd take a paycut if he won. *Problem is Roc already lost money off the last fight. Kovalev took short money and a much smaller guarantee. So, even though their fighter won, Roc's financial performance compared to Main Events was a different story. *Roc isn't thrilled to be locked in to another money-losing fight immediately. Andre gains at their expense, and he knows it. He's a tough, stubborn negotiator who's used to things going his way. He doesn't need the money, and he's not going to budge. *Main Events knows Roc's in a hard place, and is going to keep pressing for the rematch. Either Roc takes the match and (likely) another loss, or Ward is kept on the sidelines so Duva can keep milking the "Ward's scared of the rematch" angle.
