Wlad is underdog because people reasonably suspect he's a washed-up fighter. Being washed-up is something that can't be fixed. There's no way round it. Having said that, I wouldn't make AJ an outright favourite yet either. I have no evidence to say he's even a true world class fighter. But we can assume he does have a future. Wlad may simply be an historical artefact at this point in time.
Aj has been learning more in sparring than his fights ... yes he has been blasting out fairly poor opposition but the sparring he gets is competitive... not that long ago people were saying he was hurt pretty bad in sparring with Okolie. I for one aint ruling out Klit in this fight what he has left in the locker may very well fit into the cracks that AJ has. either can being the other one out in this fight. Off topic but both could prob bang out Wilder fairly quickly i reckon
The Wlad fight is the first in which Matchroom have shown a willingness to let him take the risks in a real fight that he's been taking in sparring. And why? Money, simple as. 18 fights in, and they want their first mega return on investment, and they don't fear a defeat because losing to a legend like Wlad is recoverable. It's all very calculated by Hearn...
There is a difference between sparring in a low pressure environment and fighting in the ring under the lights with superior opposition. It's been noted he has been knocked by three different fighters in sparring which does not bode well for the future.
I dont totally agree with that ... every HW will have been dropped, hurt bad in sparring, its better that it happens then ... they can then work on how to to recover from that and not panic when it does happen come fight night. The bigger worry is that AJ gets wrapped up in cotton wool so much that he doesnt get exposed to this in sparring. Time will tell. I think were all in agreement that his chin aint cast iron but i dont think its as bad as most folk on here make out.
Yeah id agree with that, I think he has been very well managed to be fair. In truth his opposition for his 18 fights is in comparison with others thro' history very good, however his comparison with others as a CHAMPION is a different matter altogether. Hearn has to be very careful and smart to be fair, he manouvered AJ into that title shot very well and jumped at a very easy opportunity, that may very well be to his detriment of his career long time, a lot of it depends on the level of competition that comes thro from now on which to be fair doesnt look that great
