Carlos Monzon fought before the 24 hr weigh in. He struggled with weight in Emile Griffith rematch. Under today conditions he would probably rehydrate to 175 - 180lbs. At SM without weight struggles he would probably be more effective. At LHW probably not as many of these fighters come in at 185 - 195lbs and some are heavyweight giant slayers. One of CM best attributes was how relaxed he was he never wasted energy or punches and the chilling way he stalked his opponents with relentless cold blooded passion. Super mw is a relative new division but has already got some great champs such as McCullum, Toney, Ward, Calzaghe, Froch , Jones Jr. However CM had a mind of a big cat and when hunting his opponent could adjust to all conditions. He didn't win his last 80 fights for a reason. Somehow , some way he alway found a way to win.
Monzon would beat McCallum , Toney ,Froch , Calzaghe on points . Jones Jr was so athletic in his prime . People only seem to remember the current RJ and say he has a weak chin . The prime RJ was king of the ring and like great champs had a touch of arrogance. RJ reminds me of Jeff Fenech , Tyson once they lost that aura of invincibility they were never the same . Jones on points. Andre Ward is not the same fighter anymore. The long contract dispute and inactivity means we have seen the best of AW. In his prime at Super mw Andre was dux of the class. Andre on points. I forget to mention Hopkins. Similar style and attitude to Monzon. Monzon points also.
I think Monzon would do very well @ 168...His physical advantages wouldn't have such an impact...But he would still be very strong (maybe stronger?) and the high ring IQ would still be there...and the style...Monzon was never taken out of his style or pace. Carlos would be a very tough out @ 168.
He'd do very well IMO, he was a very big MW and he'd be a good sized SMW, in fact at SMW's relatively short history the only SMW I'd pick with confidence to beat him is RJJ, as he was as close to unbeatable as it get's at SMW.
Jones best opponent at 160 was a green Hopkins. jones looked very human against Hopkins, Monzon UD Jones
Well Monzon would be atleast 8 pound lighter on fight night so he will lose to all the bigger opponents.
This is the thing I've come to realise. It's better looking good against a great opponent than looking great against a good opponent.
