Having now read Reznik's post I withdraw my remark ,and apologize for doubting your word on what fights you have personally been present at.
I've sat next to Mickey a few times , but only on his own shows and he never sat down for long, he was too busy working the room and thinking about his next matchup! Fascinating character, and a very shrewd operator and judge of fighters.

What I mean by that is, if you don't have the capability to deliver your power ,you ain't got none! Whether its because of eroded reflexes ,bad hands ,your legs have gone and you can't get into rage whatever, it amounts to the same thing.

Yes he was, a little sideline, in the Pintor fight he asked to go to Owens corner and tell them to stop the fight, around the 6th I believe. I had to wait til the rd ended, just when I was about to go, he pulled me back, and no dont go, I dont want to 2nd guess the corner. That nite as he was going to see after Owens, his pocket was picked, losing quite a bit.

Mickey had two interests boxing and gambling which often combined. He lost a lot of money in Vegas once but got the debt waived because he took a plane -load of high-rollers there for a fight and a week- end gambling fest

You're correct about eroded reflexes, bad hands, your legs, wrong on power and range. If old Joe hit you, it did damage, if he had the range he could hurt you. If a guy knew how to punch and could punch you knew better to avoid getting hit and it seems the majority of Joe's comeback foes avoided getting hit. He literally destroyed Beshore. So please see that Joe was still a very dangerous fighter.

Louis looked damn good with Savold in fact he did something Marciano couldnt do, he dropped Savold, not with a right but a left hook. No matter what you may think Savold was highly ranked and Joe did very well in that fight even throwing your favorite right crosses.

Louis looked decent against Savold I concede that, but Savold was as ringworn as he was.Marciano had a bad night against Savold and was panned for it,it happens.
    Lets agree to differ .

NP, IDK if you knew Johnny Bos, Johnny helped Mickey a bunch by bringing Americans over to the UK. I had a 5'2 '40pdr PD, named Frankie Warren, Mickey brought Frankie into Vegas to ck him out. Mickey had him spar with a decent veteran Henry Brim, I believe was his name Frankie all but knocked him out. Mickey had money flow problems so he opted out. I then put Frankie with Duva, and Mickey told Johnny, "I think we made a mistake by not signing Frankie". I believe Frankie would have done better with Mickey. Frankie went on to beat Buddy McGirt and Ronnie Shields and became #1 but his career ended abruptly cos of detacted retinas both eyes. I heard from UK guys that Mickey was a bit of a bad guy to do business with, that I dont know he was always a good guy to me.

I think Mcvey fought as a pro if I recall correctly?
If you ask me, becoming a pro in boxing is a feat in itself and earns my respect.

Mcvey has also has tremendous depth in boxing history knowledge. Not matched by many that I know.

Now that everyone is toasting tankards of Unicorn p*ss... back to topic... it seems everyone agrees that the Louis Marciano faced was in decline but rather disagrees on the degree of decay. So it is a point on a spectrum that is (or possibly isn't too much) in disagreement. I will note that old fighters get less consistent. They have good nights where they capture some of the magic of old (Savold fight) and nights that prematurely call into question their demise. We can take it further from there.

To answer the premise of the thread, I think this fight shows how good Rocky is.
He knocked out a contender that was running through the ranks on a big streak in brutal fashion.

Like Luf said, he put on a very smart performance. He showed a lot of skill in this fight to go along with his power.

I think you need a 1930's Louis to make the fight competitive.
A 1936-1938 Louis would probably beat Rocky in an all out brutal war.

I think Bos, whom I only know by reputation ,succeeded Lou Viscusi as Duff's US agent/talent scout. Mickey spoke highly of Bos ,but said Viscusi was not trustworthy. Mickey was in partnership with Jarvis Astaire who had his fingers in many pies. They later embraced Terry Lawless, trainer of many fighters and of course they had to include Ray Barrett because initially he had the exclusive rights to boxing promotions at the Royal Albert Hall,Barrett bailed out early but Lawless, Duff ,and Astaire had a long and mutually profitable association. I've heard lots of conflicting stories about Duff , as you know no manager/promoter has a smooth working relationship with all the fighters he handles/ deals with.Several of Mickey's fighters won't hear a word against him, others such as Honeyghan are less unreserved in their praise.
Marvin Hagler publicly apologised to Duff for accusing him of creaming off John Mugabi's purses, after Mickey produced the facts and figures from their fight . Marvin was a big enough man to say," sorry I was wrong".
IMO Duff knew how to move a fighter and ,more importantly when, several UK guys owe the fact that they won world titles to his expertise and timing, under different guidance and promotion they may very well not have done so. Never met Lou Duva , so I may be completely wrong but he comes across as a blow hard to me, not a cool calm corner man, nor a teacher,a guy whose been around for a long time and gradually become," one of the faces", but not one with a lot of words of wisdom to impart. As I say I may be totally wrong.ps I recognize the names Warren& Brim but I don't think I ever saw either of them fight.

No pro, sadly my feet were too slow to get me above opponent level.
Don't get carried away here, I am an average poster, not in the premier league, but hopefully not in the 4th division either.
